Description of job

Design, development, and implementation of software for additive manufacturing systems.

Purpose

The Department of Energy Manufacturing Demonstration Facility and the Manufacturing Systems Research Group at the Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) are seeking research staff to help with the development of user-facing graphical software and process controls.  Slicing software is one example of user-facing software required for the functioning of additive manufacturing processes.  Combined with feedback and controls from the additive manufacturing systems, a broad software package to address these challenges must be developed.  Such a software package requires expertise in multiple computer science disciplines with the goal of developing innovative features not previously seen to advance additive manufacturing.

Major Duties/Responsibilities

The selected candidate will:

- Assist in the design, development, implementation, and testing of components for software related to manufacturing processes that include:

  • Large scale polymer extrusion systems
  • Electron beam powder bed
  • Laser powder bed
  • Directed energy depositions
  • Large scale metal systems
  • Machine tool systems

- Collaborate with a team of engineers including mechanical, material, electrical, computer scientists from industry, academia and other national labs on the development of these systems

- Help in the development of new and advanced sensory and process controls for additive and subtractive manufacturing

Qualifications Required

The position requires:

  • A Bachelor’s in Computer Science.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills to support regular interactions with sponsors, peer reviewers, and others and to prepare reports, proposals, publications and journal articles is required.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills to support team building and leadership are required.
  • The demonstrated ability to manage project schedules, scopes, and budgets is required.
  • This position requires access to technology that is subject to export control requirements. Successful candidates must be qualified for such access without an export control license, which requires U.S. Citizenship or LPR (Lawful Permanent Residence).

Additional Qualifications Preferred

  • Familiarity with C++.
  • Experience in multiple computer science disciplines including but not limited to path planning, visualization, computational geometry, and optimization algorithms.
  • Experience with skeletonization and mesh manipulation algorithms.
  • Knowledge of subtractive and hybrid-based construction methodology.
  • Previous experience with additive manufacturing software development with an understanding of the AM process and its challenges

This position will remain open for a minimum of 5 days after which it will close when a qualified candidate is identified and/or hired.

We accept Word (.doc, .docx), Adobe (unsecured .pdf), Rich Text Format (.rtf), and HTML (.htm, .html) up to 5MB in size. Resumes from third party vendors will not be accepted; these resumes will be deleted and the candidates submitted will not be considered for employment.
