This position serves to develop clear, concise, and intuitive ways of communicating and interacting with data and technical information, through software development, data analysis and technical writing. The person in this position will work with other group and division staff to develop software for data analysis.




The Department of Energy Manufacturing Demonstration Facility and the ­­­­Advanced Manufacturing Group at the Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) are seeking an experienced  Software Developer and Data Analyst to process, analyze, and communicate data as well as develop software in support of the manufacturing R&D portfolio. The specific focus of this job posting is to fill a need in the area of advanced manufacturing.


Major Duties/Responsibilities


You will:

  • Use a variety of programming languages, including C++, Java, JavaScript, and Unity, to develop intuitive user interfaces for multiple projects, including both software and web-based programs.
  • Develop graphics for user interfaces, using image- and vector-editing software when necessary.
  • Assist in developing, organizing and connecting back-end functionality with front-end user interfaces in ways that enhance ease of use for the end user.
  • Work with other researchers to analyze collected data through advanced use of spreadsheet software such as Microsoft Excel with Visual Basic for Applications.
  • Help develop software programs that parse data into more easily understandable information, using programming languages such as Python or MatLab.
  • Organize data and generate graphical representations of data that make analysis easier for other researchers.


Qualifications Required

The position requires:

  • Master's degree in engineering, science, psychology or related field.
  • Familiarity with programming and software development, particularly in relation to user interface development.
  • Knowledge of and/or familiarity with basic concepts of the psychology of human-machine interaction.
  • Expertise in visual and written communications, including a broad understanding of how to organize and format information for clarity and conciseness.
