Overview:
We are seeking a Technical Staff Member with experience in metal deposition additive manufacturing (AM) to support research in electron beam melting and laser powder bed systems. This position resides in the Deposition Science and Technology Group in the Manufacturing Science Division (MSD), Energy Technology and Science Directorate (ESTD) at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL).
As part of our research team, you will be based at the Manufacturing Demonstration Facility (MDF) and work alongside a diverse team of scientists on the development of materials and equipment and processing techniques for reliability of metals additive manufacturing depositions through in-situ process monitoring, data analytics, and routine machine maintenance. You will be expected to perform manufacturing tasks, operate additive manufacturing equipment, design experimental build geometries, utilize data analytic tools for reports and presentations, and perform collaborative work to support research efforts on metals additive manufacturing systems to support internal and external project customers.
Major Duties/Responsibilities:
- Perform manufacturing tasks supporting research in the area of metals additive manufacturing depositions (Electron beam melting, selective laser melting, directed energy depositions) and analyze experiments establishing correlations between process and microstructure
- Oversee additive manufacturing equipment including both laser and electron beam powder bed including breakdown, setup of equipment, maintenance and operation
- Work with the design team on designing for additive manufacturing
- Design build layouts and geometries with computer automated design programs
- Oversee operations of equipment, organize projects, and notify users of equipment status on a weekly basis
- Standardize operations of equipment including digital data, design files, and other aspects of AM Optimize scan strategies by working closely with computer scientists
- Communicate frequently and effectively to all team members
- Present and report research results in a timely manner

Basic Qualifications:
- A M.S. degree in Materials Science and Engineering, Mechanical Engineering or related field or B.S. degree and two years of experience
- Hands on experience with 3D printing, metal deposition experience, or conventional manufacturing
- Understanding of the basics of metallurgical materials science and mechanical behavior of materials
- Experience using commercial CAD software’s for designing and modifying digital part files
Preferred Qualifications:
- Master’s degree in Materials Science, Mechanical Engineering, or closely related field
- Background in metal deposition, powder-bed additive manufacturing (electron beam melting, selective laser melting, directed energy deposition)
- Background and knowledge of high temperature materials such as refractory systems and Ni based superalloys
- Excellent written and oral communication skills
- Programming experience in scripting languages such as Python, Matlab, C++
- Motivated self-starter with the ability to work independently and to participate creatively in collaborative teams across the laboratory
- Ability to function well in a fast-paced research environment, set priorities to accomplish multiple tasks within deadlines, and adapt to changing needs
- Experience with conventional manufacturing
- Experience with analysis of data from non-destructive evaluation techniques such as computed tomography
Special Requirement:
This position requires access to technology that is subject to export control requirements. Successful candidates must be qualified for such access without an export control license, which requires U.S. Citizenship or LPR (Lawful Permanent Residence).
