Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) invites candidates to apply for an animator position in the Communications Division to support a variety of organizations around the laboratory.

 

We seek a visual communicator who is passionate about creating engaging and inspiring designs that convey complex scientific and technological advances. In this role, you will work closely with other members of the communications team to produce timely designs that illustrate and illuminate communications materials for distribution to the US Department of Energy (DOE) and both general and targeted audiences. Under minimal supervision you will develop thought-provoking designs that convey the laboratory’s world-class research using modern tools and techniques.

 

Major Duties/Responsibilities

 

  • Conceptualize and effectively design, plan, and produce complex 3D illustrations/animations, video compositions, and simulations.
  • Develop storyboards, animatics, and 3D mockups for complex animations and multimedia projects.
  • Work closely with internal customers to produce timely and visually effective communications tools for distribution to internal and external stakeholders including coworkers and peers, industry, academia, government sponsors, and the public at large.
  • Prioritize requests, coordinate and schedule workflow, and facilitate production with voice talent or other vendors to meet tight, demanding deadlines and ensure cost-effectiveness.
  • Work proficiently in software programs including 3ds Max, Blender, Adobe Creative Cloud, and Microsoft Office.
  • Ensure compliance with environment, safety, health, and quality program requirements.
  • Maintain a strong commitment to the implementation and perpetuation of values and ethics.
  • Follow internal review processes to ensure highest quality products.
  • Collaborate with scientists and researchers to understand and communicate complex subject matter through clear and effective design solutions.
  • Engage with team members in all areas of the communications process and contribute to the overall mission.

 

Qualifications Required

  • A minimum of an associate degree in art, graphic design, or related field with at least 2 years of experience as described below. (Equivalent combination of education and experience will be considered.)
  • Experience in conceptualizing and effectively designing, planning, directing, and coordinating production of multiple and complex 3D illustrations and animations including working across the 3D production pipeline: modeling, rigging, textures/materials, animation, lighting/rendering.
  • Knowledge and understanding of 3D animation development and emerging technologies in 3D visualization.
  • Applicable knowledge of design fundamentals and skills in graphic design core competencies such as color, typography, layout, and composition. Experience working within traditional and digital formats.

 

The successful candidate must have excellent attention to detail; the ability to understand, follow, and implement complex instructions; strong organizational skills, including the flexibility to handle multiple assignments for multiple customers simultaneously; and excellent verbal communication skills. The candidate must possess the ability to prioritize and meet deadlines; strong interpersonal skills; the ability to identify opportunities to delegate or assume tasks as needed; the ability to work—both independently and with all levels of researchers and staff—in a team-based environment; and strong skills in solving problems and developing and implementing solutions.

 

Qualifications Desired

 

Bachelor’s degree preferred. Experience working at a scientific organization, national laboratory, or other DOE facility/office. Experience producing content for the web and social media. Familiarity with producing interactive applications a plus.
