Overview:  

We are seeking an Applied Sensor Analytics Engineer who will focus on application of image/signal processing and machine learning/AI methods to energy, science, and national security challenges.  This position resides in the Multimodal Sensor Analytics (MSA) group in the Energy Sensing Analytics and Communications section at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL).  

 

As part of our team, you will be working with engineers developing novel sensing systems for electrification (grid, storage, production), manufacturing, and national security challenges being addressed by ORNL.  These sensor systems will include multiple data modalities (images, video, and time-series data).  Two potential initial application areas for this position are multi-modal analytics of data from additive manufacturing systems, and AI based knowledge extraction from video data streams for robotic control for automated recycling.

Major Duties/Responsibilities: 

  • Responsible for independently solving complex technical problems
  • Development of advanced software and hardware solutions for sensing applications
  • Build software writing clean and well-structured code
  • Write maintainable code with documentation and unit test
  • Implement various algorithms for computation at the edge, with a focus on high performance calculation
  • Support R&D staff members on their projects

Basic Qualifications:

  • A MS degree in Electrical/Computer Engineering/Computer Science or a related discipline
  • A minimum of 10 years of experience in developing algorithms for image/sensor systems.
  • Understanding of advanced AI/ML networks and experience modifying those networks for application specific needs
  • Proficiency in modern C/C++ and Python
  • Proficient with computer vision and AI libraries such as OpenCV, CUDA, TensorFlow, and Keras
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills

 

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Motivated self-starter with the ability to work independently and to participate creatively in collaborative teams across the laboratory.
  • Ability to function well in a fast-paced research environment, set priorities to accomplish multiple tasks within deadlines, and adapt to ever changing needs.
  • Experience in designing and building original algorithms for data processing and understanding
  • Experience developing on embedded computer vision and AI platforms such as NVidia Jetson, Raspberry Pi, and/or Beaglebone AI
