The Biometrics and Identity Research (BIR) group at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) conducts research, development, and deployment of human, group, and object recognition technologies to address national security and other worldwide challenges. Our core research capabilities are biometrics, signal and image processing, computer vision, machine learning, data analytics, computational imaging, image reconstruction, and electronics. In general, BIR’s activities involve first-class interdisciplinary research with other research groups at ORNL, collaborations with private industry and academic partners across the nation, and mission-specific support for our national security research sponsors. The National Security Sciences Directorate conducts research and development to confront some of the nation’s most difficult security challenges and adversaries.  Our directorate houses S&T leadership in cybersecurity and cyber-physical resiliency, data analytics, geospatial science and technology, nuclear nonproliferation, and high-performance computing for sensitive national security missions. We draw on the Laboratory’s exceptional facilities and work closely with leading researchers in other areas at the lab such as nuclear and chemical sciences and engineering, applied materials, advanced manufacturing, biosecurity, transportation, and computing.  Our multi-disciplinary research teams are passionate about discovery and innovation as we create science-based solutions to complex security threats that put public safety, national defense, energy infrastructure, and the economy at risk.

Job Duties and Responsibilities:

As a full-time Associate Research Staff your work will consist of creating and sharing a large, centralized store of data that multiple Government organizations can access and use to enhance their current artificial intelligence (AI) / Machine Learning (ML) applications. You will expand the datasets within the store when the dataset does not fully cover the entire application space. From these large datasets, you will create training and test data sets that are usable by AI/ML applications. The goal is to provide as much wide access as possible to this data and become the “Standard Training Set” for multispectral [radio frequency (RF), electro-optical (EO), infrared (IR), and optical ranging (OR)] object classification types of problems.

 

You will use the hosted data sets to create sets of novel sensor parameters that can be utilized to better classify objects. You will develop and evaluate AI/ML applications and their ability to classify objects captured by the measurement dataset. You will utilize explainable AI/ML techniques to better understand the decision making of the AI/ML applications that will use the data.

 

The position requires development of innovative solutions for multispectral object classification, frequent and consistent review of related literature, and collaboration with other team members for the development of technical demonstrations, proposals, oral presentations, and publications. No less important, the interdisciplinary nature of projects demands strong interpersonal skills, evidence of working well in teams, and an expected desire to seek and deveklop healthy relationships within and outside the group. Finally, the position requires a passion for mission-focused National Security challenges.
 

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelors with 6+ years of experience, Masters with 3+ years of experience, or a Doctorate degree with a strong record of research and development in Computer Science, Electrical and Computer Engineering, Mathematics, or a related field.
  • Proven R&D experience in radar and optics applications, computer vision, supervised, unsupervised machine learning/Artificial Intelligence (ML/AI), and image and signal processing.
  • Excellent programming and software engineering skills.
  • Hands-on skills and experience developing impactful ML/AI software for heterogeneous, multi-modal data sets.
  • Excellent communication skills for conveying technical material to both scientists and non-scientists in both written and oral presentations.
  • Self-disciplined work ethic and eagerness to tackle challenging research problems.
  • Strong desire to work in a team environment.

 

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with radar and optical tracking and imaging systems.
  • Experience with Python, C programing languages and Git version control system.
  • Experience with TensorFlow and Jupyter Notebooks
  • Experience with Computational Imaging and Image Reconstruction techniques.
  • Familiarity with federal funding procedures, regulations, policies and practices.
  • Experience developing and managing research projects.

 

Special Requirement

This position requires the ability to obtain and maintain a clearance from the Department of Energy. As such, this position is a Workplace Substance Abuse (WSAP) testing designated position. WSAP positions require passing a pre-placement drug test and participation in an ongoing random drug testing program.
