Overview:    

We are seeking an early career Vacuum Technician who will support the Vacuum Systems Group in the Research Accelerator Division, Neutron Sciences Directorate at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL). In this role you will perform assembly, testing, commissioning, maintenance, and operation of the Spallation Neutron Sources’ (SNS) accelerator, instrument, target, and various other vacuum systems and related equipment under direct supervision.

 

Major Duties/Responsibilities:   

  • Under supervision, perform assembly operations and modifications on precision electro-mechanical equipment. 

  • Assist in monitoring and maintaining specialized components and systems during and after commissioning. 

  • Participate in installation, testing, and commissioning of vacuum systems. 

  • Assemble, test, certify, and document the mechanical and vacuum systems and their components.  

  • Under supervision, set-up, operate, calibrate, and ensure integrity of various test equipment and apparatus. 

  • Assist in developing procedures and documentation related to the design, fabrication, testing, and operation of mechanical and vacuum systems and their components; assist in documenting records for assembly, testing and qualification. 

  • Maintain test and measurement data, travelers, and any other documentation records related to the fabrication, testing, commissioning, and operation. 

  • Use electronic and mechanical test and measurement equipment to verify vacuum system and component performance and integrity. 

  • Use computers to collect, record, and analyze data for accepting, operating, and maintaining the mechanical and vacuum systems.

Basic Qualifications: 

  • An AS in a science, engineering, or technology related field and minimum of 2 years of proven experience. A high school diploma may be considered with a minimum of 4 years of proven experience. 

  • Familiar or knowledgeable in the construction, assembly, troubleshooting, repair, calibration, testing and operation of mechanical and vacuum systems and components. 

  • Experience in the use of mechanical and electronic test and measurement equipment. 

  • Familiar with use of office automation tools (such as word processing, spreadsheets, and databases). 

  • Some overtime will be required. Must be willing to work outside the normal work schedule, including occasional weekends. 

 

Preferred Qualifications: 

  • Experience with vacuum systems, vacuum components, and instrumentation and associated test equipment in rough, high, and ultra-high vacuum environments. 

  • Working knowledge of electrical power, instrumentation, and computers. 

  • Excellent written and oral communication skills. 

  • Motivated self-starter with the ability to work independently and to participate creatively in collaborative teams across the laboratory. 

  • Ability to function well in a fast-paced research environment, set priorities to accomplish multiple tasks within deadlines, and adapt to constantly evolving needs.
