Overview:

We are seeking a Beam Instrumentation Technician to support the Beam Instrumentation and Experimental Techniques in the Research Accelerator Division, Neutron Science Directorate at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL). You will design, manufacture, and maintain Beam Instrumentation components and systems. You will provide support to scientists and engineers to define system problems and perform system upgrades and lead junior technicians in troubleshooting efforts and system calibrations.

 

Major Duties and Responsibilities: 

  • Schedule, perform and track corrective maintenance of Beam Instrumentation equipment installed in the Spallation Neutron Source (SNS).
  • Analyze equipment failures to identify trends.
  • Define and perform preventive maintenance procedures to reduce operational failures.
  • Work with scientists and engineers to identify design deficiencies in electronic systems.
  • Design and implement system upgrades.
  • Create system documentation to include, manufacturing details, test and acceptance procedures, maintenance procedures, and operating instructions for installed and test systems.
  • Provide documentation of test results for use as record and in publications.
  • Perform advanced signal measurements of system equipment to analyze RF phase and signal to noise.
  • Use measurements to maintain and upgrade RF signal distribution system, manufacture strip line components, and construct filters for BI equipment.
  • Work with scientists and engineers to develop, design, build, test, and implement new instrumentation devices for use at ORNL and other laboratories.
  • Calibrate and maintain inventory of Beam Instrumentation test equipment.
  • Track calibration of test equipment in DATA Stream for traceability.
  • Assist auditors with questions and documentation of test equipment calibrations and work control as required.
  • Provide leadership, expertise, and advice to junior technicians in support of Beam Instrumentation mission.
  • Perform supervisory duties to define work, provide work control documentation, and task assignments when required.

 

Basic Qualifications:

  • Associates degree in a scientific or technical discipline and a minimum of four years of experience.
  • A high school diploma may be considered with a minimum of six years of relevant experience.
  • Competent in usage of RF measurement equipment for RF signal testing.

 

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience with Spectrum Analyzer, Time Domain Reflectometer (TDR), Network Analyzer, RF Signal Generator, Power Meter, Oscilloscopes, Sweep Generators, and Function Generators.
  • At least two years of hands-on experience with small signal electronics, including soldering techniques and surface mount component replacement.
  • Chassis building and equipment racking.
  • Experience with PC computers and/or National Instruments based systems and interfaces.
  • Basic experience in use of hand tools and shop tools like drill press, bench grinder, cut off saw, etc.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills
  • Motivated self-starter with the ability to work independently and to participate creatively in collaborative teams across the laboratory 
  • Ability to function well in a fast-paced research environment, set priorities to accomplish multiple tasks within deadlines, and adapt to ever changing needs
