Description of job The Fusion Energy Division at the Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) seeks applications for an early career R&D Staff Member in the area of Fusion Blanket and Fuel Cycle. ORNL’s Blanket and Fuel Cycle, Fusion Engineering, Fusion Technology, and Remote Systems Groups carry out research in a wide range of areas of magnetic fusion energy development and related technology development. This work is coordinated with the ORNL Fusion Materials Science and Technology activities.  The program is a strong and vital component of both the U.S. fusion program and the international fusion community. The successful candidate will work with a multidisciplinary team of experimentalists, simulation/design, and technology experts.


Job Duties and Responsibilities: The successful candidate will be involved in both developing new and applying existing models and simulation tools to understand fusion blanket and/or fusion fuel cycle processes and their design optimization.  This can include thermo-mechanics, helium computational fluid dynamics, liquid metal CFD/MHD, thermal hydraulics, mass and heat transfer, materials, and hydrogen behavior.  The selected candidate will be responsible for interaction with division staff and the many external collaborators that work with the ORNL research group. The candidate will be expected to work independently, collaborate with experimentalists, fully document work in technical reports and publications, effectively interface with project sponsors, and lead the identification and development of research proposals.


Experience and Educational Requirements

  • The successful candidate must have completed a Ph.D. in Nuclear Engineering, Thermal-Mechanics, Fluids, Material-engineering interface, Civil Engineering or a closely related field
  • The applicant is expected to have graduated with a PhD, or will soon graduate with a PhD.
  • Candidates must have experience in the development and application of complex engineering codes and preferable to have familiarity with nuclear systems
  • Experimental opportunities and development of experimental capability exist, and the candidate would be expected to participate as appropriate, as well as participate on multi-institutional and multi-discipline design teams
  • Excellent verbal, presentation, and writing skills are required to enable effective interaction and communication with technical peers, program managers, collaborators, and sponsors
  • Candidates must show examples of their academic and work experience.
