Overview

 

The Integrated Building Performance Group is seeking a Building Energy Modeler to join ORNL’s dedicated team in support of several U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) programs, in the residential sector to safely and sustainably reduce energy costs for low-income households and in the federal sector for federal agencies.

 

ORNL supports DOE’s Weatherization Assistance Program (WAP) with a variety of activities, including the software tools to enable the weatherization process and DOE’s Federal Energy Management Program (FEMP) with an array of support activities including software tools to streamline the project development process. This position would be a part of ORNL’s Weatherization Assistant development team, which develops and maintains the Weatherization Assistant suite of tools.

 

While the focus of the position will be on the WAP-funded toolset, the successful applicant will have the opportunity to work on other projects within the ORNL Building Technologies Research and Integration Center (BTRIC) portfolio. BTRIC is the Department of Energy’s only designated user facility dedicated to performing early-stage research and development in building technologies and provides a wide range of research and development opportunities.

 

Job Duties and Responsibilities

  • Participate in the development of the Weatherization Assistant suite of tools, including taking the lead on development of features for the Weatherization Assistant web application, particularly related to data exchanges (with XML and/or JSON), reporting, and model creation/modification
  • Assist in developing the Investment Grade Audit tool for the Federal Energy Management Program’s Energy Savings Performance Contract (ESPC) ENABLE tool
  • Identify opportunities to enhance existing and support the development of tools to facilitate project development and energy analysis for performance contracting projects.
  • Assist in development team planning activities, including participation in regular development team meetings
  • Communicate with stakeholders on development priorities and to collect feedback for development planning
  • Communicate with program sponsors and participate in meeting with and current and potential sponsors of work
  • Work with collaborators both inside and outside the laboratory to further WAP goals and priorities
  • Participate in the development of progress reports, white papers, fact sheets, case studies and other guidance and reporting documents for the program

 

Basic Qualifications

 

  • BS in mechanical engineering, architectural engineering, or related engineering discipline with 3 or more years of relevant experience or MS in mechanical engineering, architectural engineering, or related engineering discipline with 2 or more years of relevant experience
  • Experience in the creation and modification of building energy models using EnergyPlus, OpenStudio, or other similar software
  • Programming experience with Python, Ruby, or other similar languages
  • Experience with XML and/or JSON files and tools
  • Proficiency with the use of the Microsoft Office suite, particularly Word and Excel  
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills  

 

 

Preferred Qualifications

 

  • Experience with the OpenStudio building energy modeling software, particularly writing OpenStudio measures
  • Exposure to energy data exchange formats such as HPXML or BuildingSync
  • Experience working with current software development tools and processes, including GitHub/GitLab and similar tools
  • Active participation in professional societies such as the American Society of Heating, Refrigeration and Air-Conditioning Engineers (ASHRAE)
