Overview: 

The Design Engineering Group within the Nonreactor Nuclear Facilities Division (NNFD) is seeking a CAD Designer with an emphasis in mechanical and structural design.  The CAD Designer will work with engineers from multiple disciplines to support nuclear facility and research operations within the Isotope Science and Engineering Directorate (ISED).

 

Major Duties / Responsibilities:

  • Work with senior engineers and scientists across multiple disciplines to develop complex engineering designs and drawing packages
  • Use Autodesk CAD software to create digital assets for projects
  • Create detailed engineering drawings to communicate designs (P&ID, Logic Diagram, Electrical Wiring Diagram, Flow Diagram, Fabrication Drawing, etc.)
  • Interface with vendors, OEMs, and distributors to gather data and select design components
  • Collaborate with facility managers, operators, and craft to identify requirements and constraints
  • Coordinate system walkdowns and equipment inspections to gather project information (photos, field measurements, as-built conditions, etc.) and document as-built conditions
  • Work with Design Manager to develop data management system for CAD files and design data
  • Mentor junior designers and provide inner departmental checks on drawing packages

 

Qualifications / Skills Required:

  • Associate of Science Degree in Computer Aided Drafting and Design (CADD) and at least 12 years experience working as a designer and drafter using Autodesk AutoCAD
  • Design experience among multiple disciplines:  Mechanical, Structural, & Electrical
  • Ability to work independently with minimum oversight and complete non-routine assignments
  • Take ownership of projects and work to continuously learn design tools and discipline
  • Excel at working on multiple projects and able to adapt to changing priorities
  • Exceptional teamwork skills, computer skills, organizational skills, and self-motivated

Qualifications / Skills Desired:

  • Familiarity with activities and equipment in a nuclear operating environment (gloveboxes, shielded casks, hot cells, remote operations, pressure vessels, nuclear ventilation, etc.)
  • Certification in AutoCAD or other Autodesk Products
  • Experience using Autodesk Vault or equivalent CAD data management software
  • Exposure to Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing – ASME / ANSI Y14.5
  • Experience using 3D scanning equipment
