Overview:
We are seeking a Cause Analysis and Critiques & Investigations Program Manager/Subject Matter Expert (SME) who will focus on stewardship of the Cause Analysis and Critiques & Investigations Program spanning training, coaching, mentoring, conducting, and further maturing. This position resides in the Contractor Assurance group in the Office of Integrated Performance Management within the Laboratory Directors Office, at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL).
As part of our team, you will…
Major Duties/Responsibilities:
- Standardize the ORNL Cause Analysis training and qualification program, providing in-house training, standardization of cause analysis methodologies and tools, mentorship of cause analysts, implementation of graded approach to cause analysis (Root vs apparent), providing oversight and feedback of in-process cause analysis, and driving improvements to performance in terms of quality and timeliness.
- This role will integrate closely with the Human Performance Improvement (HPI) SME to ensure ORNL causals accurately analyze and account for HPI elements, and associated corrective actions leverage HPI best practices.
- This role will also establish new standards for event management elements spanning fact findings, investigations, and critiques in order to more efficiency execute those functions in response to events. Process improvements in this space will integrate HPI elements and coordinate closely with the Regulatory Reporting SMEs to improve quality, efficiency, effectiveness, and timeliness.
- A core component will be to focus on the fundamentals of cause analysis; ensuring ORNL is effectively analyzing, responding, correcting, and learning from operational events/incidents.
- The SME will be available to complete/lead ORNLs most impactful cause analyses.

Basic Qualifications:
- A B.S. or B.A in business or technical discipline is required for this position.
- A minimum of 12 years of experience with a B.S. or 10 Years of experience with advanced degree.
- Previous Cause Analysis, Issues Management and/or Corrective Actions Program experience is required.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Previous experience managing and implementing Cause Analysis programs.
- Excellent written and oral communication skills.
- Motivated self-starter with the ability to work independently and to participate creatively in collaborative teams across the laboratory.
- Ability to function well in a fast-paced research environment, set priorities to accomplish multiple tasks within deadlines, and adapt to ever changing needs.
Special Requirements:
Q clearance: This position requires the ability to obtain and maintain a clearance from the Department of Energy. As such, this position is a Workplace Substance Abuse (WSAP) testing designated position. WSAP positions require passing a pre-placement drug test and participation in an ongoing random drug testing program.
