Overview:

We are seeking a Project Engineer who will support the Engineering Design Group in the Enrichment Science and Engineering Division (ESED), Isotope Science and Engineering Directorate (ISED) at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL).  The selected candidate will plan and manage the execution of engineering projects and fulfill a control account manager (CAM) role.

 

ESED serves the nation in two critical areas: advancing enrichment technologies and exploring stable isotope production and applications. The division leverages an elite staff of scientists and engineers with the world-leading capabilities of Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) to deliver groundbreaking advancements with a variety of applications, from national security to life-saving medical treatments.

 

ESED is the national steward for the research, development, and demonstration of centrifuge technology. The successful candidate will provide support for research and development using principles of Integrated Safety Management (ISM) within a division that supports multiple projects and programs.

 

The Engineering Design Group is tasked with the development of machinery to strategically advance the science and technology of enrichment and processing of uranium-bearing and stable isotope compounds.

Major Duties and Responsibilities:

The selected candidate will be responsible for applying project management principles along with sound technical judgement to the conduct of engineering projects, ensuring execution according to approved schedule, cost, and technical milestones.  The Project Engineer will work closely with the Engineering Design Group Leader, Work Breakdown Structure (WBS) Managers, CAMs, Section Heads and other Group Leaders to execute work defined by project management plans (PMP’s). Additional interfaces will be with principal investigators, ISED management, engineers, designers, technicians, and other stakeholder personnel.

Responsibilities will include:

 

  • Developing and tracking budgets and schedules for multiple projects, as well as the operation of the Engineering Design Group
  • Developing and monitoring project risk registers and taking proactive mitigation steps
  • Preparing and presenting regularly scheduled reports
  • Interfacing with Project Control Specialists to ensure adherence to master plans and schedules
  • Contributing to the preparation and negotiation of contracts
  • Contribting to the development of procedures
  • Leading by example, using the principles in ORNL’s “Research Code of Conduct” as a guide for proposing, performing, and communicating research and in dealing with others
  • Exemplifying a commitment to “One ORNL” by modeling lab expectations for excellence in research, operations, and community engagement, and by working cooperatively to leverage capabilities across the lab

Basic Qualifications:

  • A Bachelors degree in a scientific or technical field and a minimum of 5 years relevant work experience
  • Demonstrable leadership experience within successful technical teams
  • An expert understanding of project management principles
  • A strong understanding of engineering project lifecycles
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills
  • The ability to work flexible hours and travel when required

 

This position requires the ability to obtain and maintain a Q clearance from the Department of Energy. As such, this position is a Workplace Substance Abuse (WSAP) testing designated position. WSAP positions require passing a pre-placement drug test and participation in an ongoing random drug testing program.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Active DOE Q security clearance
  • Project Management Professional (PMP) certification
  • Detailed knowledge of and experience with Earned Value Management (EVMS)
  • Understanding of DOE Order 413.3
  • Experience in preparing and participating in DOE critical decision reviews
  • Motivated self-starter with the ability to work independently and to participate creatively in collaborative teams across the laboratory 
  • Ability to function well in a fast-paced research environment, set priorities to accomplish multiple tasks within deadlines, and adapt to ever changing needs
