Overview: 

The Testbed Science and Engineering Group within the Enrichment Science and Engineering Division (ESED) is seeking a Chemical Process Engineer. ESED serves the nation in two critical areas: advancing enrichment technologies and exploring stable isotope production and applications. The division leverages an elite staff of scientists and engineers with the world-leading capabilities of Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) to deliver groundbreaking advancements with a variety of applications, from national security to life-saving medical treatments.

ESED is the national steward for the research, development, and demonstration of centrifuge technology. The successful candidate will provide research and development (R&D) leadership within the group that strategically advances science and technology focused on gas testing of prototype enrichment devices for processing uranium-bearing and stable isotope compounds. 

 

The Testbed Science and Engineering Group is focused on the development of gas testing test beds and enrichment systems by conceptualizing and designing robust and flexible test beds for using state-of-the-art systems engineering principles. This group is particularly focused on the advancements of test beds and enrichment systems by human-machine interface research and system logic development. Additionally, the group develops and implements advanced control system architectures for centrifuge test beds. This position will have an emphasis in the areas of instrumentation hardware and software, and the successful candidate will make a significant contribution to projects involving isotope enrichment, nuclear nonproliferation, and instrumentation of mission-critical systems.

Major Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Perform research and development of equipment and systems used to process uranium-bearing and stable isotope compounds.
  • Provide technical guidance and leadership to facilitate the design, procurement, fabrication, construction, and installation of testbeds and production isotope enrichment systems supporting multiple enrichment technology programs.
  • Understand and contribute to detailed formal designs, testing/analysis plans, and fabrication plans in coordination with stakeholder personnel.
  • Provide technical leadership in a team environment. The successful candidate is expected to work collaboratively with coworkers and management, as well as independently, to fully document work performed in the forms of technical reports and presentations and to participate in the development of research proposals. The position involves interfacing with principal investigators, management, engineers, fabricators, modelers, and test campaign personnel.
  • Own specific scopes within the Testing Science and Cascade Engineering Section and the Testbed Science and Engineering Group to deliver designs for world-leading science and technology supporting enrichment sciences.
  • Coordinate internal and external design reviews as well as facilitate tracking and closeout of actions taken during these reviews.
  • Act to ensure safe and effective operations.
  • Support the Group Leader in technical leadership in the Testbed Science and Engineering Group.
  • Support the Group Leader by helping to certify the technical quality of the group’s products and services.
  • Ensure compliance with Environment, Safety and Health (ES&H) and Quality Assurance requirements.

Basic Qualifications:

  • BS Degree and 5 or more years of experience in a mechanical field of study
  • Demonstrated experience working in cross-disciplined R&D teams.
  • Demonstrated experience in process flow diagrams and equipment design
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills
  • The ability to clearly communicate, both verbally and in writing, to sponsoring agencies, other engineers and researchers, technicians, and craftsmen
  • The successful candidate must also have the ability to work with minimal supervision and will be expected to provide input and influence project direction through interaction with project team leadership.
  • Ability to hold and maintain a US Department of Energy (DOE) Q security clearance is required
  • The ability to work flexible hours and travel when required.
  • Proven ability to function well in a fast-paced research environment, set priorities to accomplish multiple tasks within deadlines, and adapt to ever-changing needs

Preferred Qualifications:

  • MS Degree and 4 or more years of experience in a mechanical field of study
  • Active Professional Engineer (PE) license
  • Active DOE Q Clearance
  • Experience with designs for gas systems
  • Experience in process design, including the following:
    • System requirements generation
    • Chemical design requirements, calculations, and detailed design associated with processes or systems
    • Design principles and calculations associated with pipe sizing for specific gas flows and vacuum
    • Vacuum system design

Special Requirements:

This position requires the ability to obtain and maintain a DOE Q clearance from the Department of Energy. As such, this position is a Workplace Substance Abuse (WSAP) testing designated position. WSAP positions require passing a preplacement drug test and participation in an ongoing random drug testing program.
