Overview:

We are seeking an R&D Staff Member who will focus on the surface chemistry and surface properties of carbon materials (graphite, porous carbons, carbon fibers, carbon composites, etc.) with an emphasis on gas adsorption and separation and other functional uses. This position resides in the Carbon and Composites Group in the Chemical Sciences Division, Physical Sciences Directorate (PSD) at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL). The goal of the Carbon and Composites group is to advance the state of the art of carbon and composites for a broad spectrum of programs and applications.

 

Major Duties/Responsibilities:

The candidate will be responsible for leading and growing our R&D portfolio in the area of carbon materials for gas adsorption, gas separation, energy storage, functional composites, and exploiting the unique surface properties of carbon in new programs and applications. It is desirable to utilize novel tools such as neutron scattering and spectroscopy techniques and the use of simulation/modeling to advance the state of understanding.

  • Work with a diverse team of engineers and scientists seeking to advance scientific understanding of carbon materials for to meet urgent demands in gas adsorption and storage, energy storage, and functional composite areas
  • Perform fundamental and applied research on the physics and chemistry of carbon surfaces and the resulting properties and applications
  • Apply and advance various techniques including high-resolution gas sorption (physical and chemical adsorption), spectroscopy, and neutron scattering Work in a collaborative team environment and regularly interact with senior scientists, program managers, group members, and industrial partners. Participate in project planning, execution and reporting
  • Present and report research results and publishing scientific results in peer-reviewed journals in a timely manner, after intellectual property has been protected
  • Ensure compliance with environment, safety, health and quality program requirements
  • Maintain strong dedication to the implementation and perpetuation of values and ethics

 

Basic Qualifications:

  • A PhD in Chemistry, Materials Science, Physical-chemistry, Chemical Engineering, or a related field and 2 years of experience
  • Background in carbon materials science and technology or related field

 

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Extensive hands-on experience in conducting and directing research activities and a proven record with both R&D success as well as conceiving ideas and successfully attracting and developing R&D projects.
  • Extensive hands-on experience with modern techniques for materials characterization, including gas sorption, spectroscopy (FTIR, Raman, XPS, LIBS), structural characterization (XRD, optical and electron microscopy), thermal analysis (TPD, TGA, DCS), materials processing, chemical synthesis and analysis.
  • The ability to effectively collaborate with both internal and external researchers to the organization
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills and the ability to communicate to an international, scientific audience
  • A record of productive and creative research demonstrated by publications in peer-reviewed journals and/or presentations at scientific conferences
  • Demonstrated ability to contribute to the production of research proposals.
  • Motivated and safety conscious
  • Motivated self-starter with the ability to work independently and to participate creatively in collaborative teams across the laboratory
  • Ability to function well in a fast-paced research environment, set priorities to accomplish multiple tasks within deadlines, and adapt to ever changing needs
