Overview:   

We are seeking an R&D Associate who will focus on the development of methods for high-throughput computational thermodynamics. This position resides in the Microstructural Evolution Modeling group in the Materials Theory Section, Materials Science & Technology Division, Physical Sciences Directorate, at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL).  

 

As part of our team, you will help to develop algorithms, software, and workflows for high-throughput computational thermodynamics calculations. These approaches will be developed for utilizing ORNL leadership-class computational resources and will be applied to development of new structural materials for clean energy applications. The position will require collaboration with ORNL computational scientists and physical metallurgists to develop next-generation approaches for materials design.

Major Duties/Responsibilities: 

  • Development and implementation of computational thermodynamics techniques

  • Utilization of computational thermodynamics to aid in the design of structural materials

  • Collaboration with computational and metallurgical experts at ORNL

Basic Qualifications:

  • A PhD degree in Materials Science or a related discipline

  • A minimum of 2 years of experience in computational methods for thermodynamics and kinetics in structural or related materials systems

 

Preferred Qualifications:

  • 5 years of experience in computational methods for thermodynamics and kinetics in structural or related materials systems

  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.

  • Motivated self-starter with the ability to work independently and to participate creatively in collaborative teams across the laboratory.

  • Ability to function well in a fast-paced research environment, set priorities to accomplish multiple tasks within deadlines, and adapt to ever changing needs.
