Control System Designer/Drafter

Date: Mar 18, 2023

Location: Oak Ridge, TN, US, 37830

Company: Oak Ridge National Laboratory

Requisition Id 9572

Purpose:

The Second Target Station (STS) is a $2 Billion, Department of Energy project to be constructed at the ORNL Spallation Neutron Source (SNS). The STS will provide wholly new capabilities for the study of a broad range of materials with neutron scattering and support thousands of users from the physical, materials, and applied sciences and industry. The science capabilities provided by the instrument suite at the STS will complement those of the two existing DOE Office of Science neutron scattering user facilities at ORNL, the First Target Station (FTS) of the SNS and the High Flux Isotope Reactor (HFIR). The STS will deliver the highest peak brightness of cold neutrons in the world, which together with advances in neutron optics, instrumentation, and detectors, will ensure US leadership in neutron scattering for decades to come.

Overview:

Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) is seeking a Control System Designer/Drafter for the Second Target Station (STS) project. This is an opportunity to join the project at an early stage and help define standards and technical approaches.

STS Integrated Control Systems (ICS) provides the controls systems, data acquisition, computing infrastructure, and personnel protection systems for the neutron scattering instruments, accelerator, target, and conventional facilities. The ICS scope includes the design, development, installation, and testing of software and hardware, and the integration of technical systems. The group includes expertise in software, process controls, process safety, instrumentation, digital design, electronics, and computing. The Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) systems for the STS are based on the open-source Experimental Physics and Industrial Control Systems (EPICS) software toolkit.

The Control System Designer/Drafter creates engineering drawings and designs using the AutoCAD Electrical Toolset software. The Designer/Drafter creates 2D schematics of control system racks and cabinets, cabling installations, electrical installations, and field wiring plans. The Designer/Drafter creates and maintains libraries of common components to facilitate efficient and accurate design development. In later stages of the project, the Designer/Drafter will perform field inspections and work to ensure proper implementation and fabrication of the electrical cabinets. In addition, the Designer/Drafter will work with control panel shops to develop acceptance criteria testing prior to field installation.

The position reports to the STS Integrated Control Systems Manager and interfaces closely with ICS engineering staff and project mechanical designers/drafters. The ICS team is a diverse group who values collaboration and the ability to work together to solve technical challenges.

Major Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Prepare engineering drawings including scaled enclosure designs, mounting hardware, and wiring diagrams for electrical and electronics systems.
  • Produce and edit P&IDs, process flow diagrams, block diagrams, and other schematics.
  • Contribute to the evaluation of conductor sizing, power requirements, and heat loads for enclosures.
  • Develop and maintain drawing templates and CAD library for common control systems components.
  • Maintain drawings and libraries in a centralized, version-controlled repository.
  • Assemble design packages including drawings, bills-of-materials (BOMs), I/O lists, and assembly instructions for reviews, procurements, and installation.
  • Interpret manufacturer data sheets and technical documents to identify appropriate parts and ensure designs reflect best practices.
  • Assemble prototype platforms and test stands.
  • Working as part of a multi-discipline group, contribute towards control system design and drawing standards.
  • Collaborate with peers at the Spallation Neutron Source.
  • Ensure compliance with Environment, Safety, and Health (ES&H) and QA requirements.
  • As a member of the ORNL scientific community, you will be expected to commit to ORNL's Research Code of Conduct. Our full code of conduct, and a statement by the Lab Director's office can be found here: https://www.ornl.gov/content/research-integrity

  • Demonstrated experience with 2D CAD software, preferably AutoCAD Electrical.
  • Experience creating layouts, schematics, and connection diagrams based on engineering designs.
  • Understanding of electrical systems and basic requirements for a distributed control system. Familiarity with relevant codes and standards such as NFPA 70, NFPA 79, UL 508A, and ISA 5.1.
  • Experience utilizing a CAD data management system or product data management system such as PTC Windchill or Autodesk Vault.
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, and PowerPoint).

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Familiarity with process controls instrumentation and I/O devices.
  • Familiarity with Allen-Bradley PLC system hardware and interface modules.
  • Familiarity with motion control system hardware.
  • Familiarity with PTC Creo.
  • Familiarity with Autodesk Revit.
  • Experience working at a National Laboratory or other scientific research facility is beneficial.
