We are seeking a Senior R&D Staff who will focus on the controlled synthesis and characterization of functional nanomaterials, thin films, and hybrid materials.  This position resides in the Functional Hybrid Nanomaterials Group in the Nanomaterials Synthesis Section, Center for Nanophase Materials Sciences Division, Physical Sciences Directorate at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL).  


As part of our research team, you will develop advanced capabilities for conducting and understanding the controlled synthesis and functional behavior of materials during formation, integration, and performance over their lifetime.  You will develop insights that enable the directed formation of materials with predicted functionality, including 2D layered materials (metal chalcogenides, graphene), carbon nanostructures (nanotubes, nanohorns), oxide thin films and heterostructures with atomically engineered interfaces, as well as hybrid organic/inorganic materials and composites.  Using cutting-edge approaches for novel synthesis platforms incorporating in situ diagnostics, spectroscopy, and functional testing, you will link material formation, structure, and interactions to functional changes in materials behavior under a variety of conditions and under external stimuli.   In particular, expertise in the synthesis and ultrafast characterization of materials that exhibit dynamic photoinduced responses including quasiparticle generation and carrier dynamics, coupling with phonons, and subsequent thermal transport and structural dynamics is a high priority as these materials lie at the heart of solar energy conversion, quantum information, energy storage, and additive/subtractive manufacturing technologies of the future. 




Major Duties/Responsibilities: 

  • Lead and develop a research program in the controlled synthesis and in situ characterization of energy materials.
  • Support user-driven and internal theme science research, maintaining the highest standards of safety, ethics, and operation proficiency.
  • Integration and use artificial intelligence and machine learning into materials synthesis and characterization workflows is highly desirable.
  • Utilization of ultrafast femtosecond-laser optical pump-probe spectroscopy techniques or other time-resolved electron or X-ray spectroscopic techniques is preferred. 
  • Performance of optical pump-probe spectroscopy of nanomaterials, including microscopy-based studies of individual nanostructures, is desirable.


Basic Qualifications:

  • A Ph.D in chemistry, physics, etc, or a related discipline with a minimum of 6 years of experience
  • Experience leading and developing programs in materials synthesis with a  focus on integrating synthesis, theory,  and characterization for predicting and controlling functionality.
  • Skills developing and using in situ diagnostics to understand the controlled synthesis or operando characterization of energy materials.
  • Experience using and understanding ultrafast laser interactions with materials for synthesis and optical spectroscopy.


Preferred Qualifications:

  • Proven record of mentoring junior scientists (students, postdocs, junior staff scientists)
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills
  • Motivated self-starter with the ability to work independently and to participate creatively in collaborative teams across the laboratory 
  • Ability to function well in a fast-paced research environment, set priorities to accomplish multiple tasks within deadlines, and adapt to ever changing needs
