The Neutron Sciences Directorate (NScD) at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) operates the High Flux Isotope Reactor (HFIR), the United States' highest flux reactor-based neutron source, and the Spallation Neutron Source (SNS), the world's most intense pulsed accelerator-based neutron source. Together these facilities operate 30 instruments for neutron scattering research, each year carrying out in excess of 1,000 experiments in the physical, chemical, materials, biological and medical sciences. As a Cooling Systems Mechanical/Piping Designer you will produce high quality engineering design packages under the general technical supervision of the Cooling Systems Group leader and with technical direction from design engineers within the Research Accelerator Division (RAD) at the Spallation Neutron Source (SNS).  Collects and maintains records, technical drawings, and documents in accordance with SNS document control procedures. Creates computer-aided design (CAD) models and detailed design packages suitable for fabrication.  Integrates CAD models and investigates and resolves issues.  Collaborates with engineers and analysts to provide information and geometry of systems in needed forms. Interested and able to learn new software and processes to continually improve efficiency of the design cycle.  This position resides in the Cooling Systems Group, Target and Mechanical Systems Section, in the Research Accelerator Division (RAD) of the Neutron Sciences Directorate (NScD) at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL).   

Major Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Produces clear, complete, and accurate, multi-system/component mechanical/piping drawing and specification packages and bills of material from layouts, rough or detailed sketches, electronic databases, walkdowns or written or verbal instructions.
  • Performs walkdowns and prepares detailed and dimensionally accurate as-built piping and equipment layout drawings.
  • Successfully interfaces and collaborates with engineers, operations personnel, physicists, and instrument scientists to bring complex engineering designs from conception through detail design, procurement, installation, and use.
  • Creates engineering drawings and digital product definition data using computer-aided design software (historically AutoCad, Navisworks, Jetstream, CREO).
  • Employs Windchill software for existing and new file storage and configuration control.
  • Identifies and resolves model, design, and interface problems together with system lead engineers.
  • Provides insights for designing to achieve quality fabrication/assembly.
  • Converts multi-CAD system subassemblies (Solidworks, CREO, AutoCAD, etc.) for effective exchange between software packages.
  • Prepares isometric drawings to assist in hydraulic performance evaluations, preparation of P&IDs and/or to support installation of piping/tubing.
  • Checks detail drawings to assure compliance with engineering codes (e.g., B31.3) and drafting standards.
  • Works with the SNS Document Control Center to ensure the accuracy and completeness of drawings filed for record copy.
  • Ensures compliance with ORNL/SNS/HFIR environment, safety, health, and quality program requirements including Standards Based Management System (SBMS)/Integrated Safety Management System (ISMS).
  • Meets milestones set by SNS Target and Mechanical Systems management, e.g. budget and schedule.
  • Maintains a strong commitment to the implementation and perpetuation of values and ethics.


Basic Qualifications:

  • Associates Degree in related discipline and a minimum of five years of relevant experience
  • Experience using 2D and 3D CAD modeling software required (i.e., AutoCad, Navisworks, Jetstream).
  • Knowledge of the technical concepts of drafting plus basic engineering principles, codes, and standards required.


Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience with piping codes (B31.3, B31.1 etc.) and assembly in various environments to include accelerator and nuclear applications resulting in successful installation and operation.
  • Experience with Windchill data management system
  • Previous pipefitter experience
  • Excellent communication skills and the ability to work individually or as part of a team are essential.
  • Enthusiasm for working in a motivated team environment.
  • Motivated self-starter with the ability to work independently and to participate creatively in collaborative teams across the laboratory.
  • Ability to function well in a fast-paced research environment, set priorities to accomplish multiple tasks within deadlines, and adapt to ever changing needs
