We are seeking a new member of the Correlated Electron Materials Group. The group ( conducts fundamental materials research to attain a better understanding of complex materials. The group focuses on the synthesis of complex functional materials, often in single crystal form, and fully characterizes their crystallographic, thermal, magnetic and transport properties over a wide temperature range from mK to 800 K and perform neutron scattering studies at international user facilities. The group is based in the Materials Science and Technology Division (MSTD), in the Physical Science Directorate (PSD) at the Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL).


As a science leader, you will initiate and perform independent R&D and establish collaborations with leading research groups to enhance the science output of the group.  You will lead multi-disciplinary and multi-organizational teams to develop world-leading programs, execute world-leading research projects and communicate project results to the international research community.


As a researcher, you will employ state-of-the-art research equipment to advance and accelerate the discovery of new materials with exotic properties and publish these results in the open literature. Examples of current research fields of interest and tools available include: the growth of 2-dimensional materials, topological materials, superconductivity, Kagome metals, Quantum magnets, novel synthesis procedures, floating zone image furnaces, low-temperature physical properties, and neutron scattering, etc.


As a leader you will help the Foundational Materials Section  and MSTD leadership strategically advances science and technology consistent with ORNL’s aspiration to be the world’s premier R&D institution and ORNL’s science culture. You will manage and mentor group members and report directly to the Section Head. You will be responsible for promoting and maintaining a culture with high ideals for safety, security and ethics.


Major Duties/Responsibilities: 

  • Lead the preparation of research proposals in correlated electron systems
  • Coordinate and conduct impactful research
  • Group leader is responsible for managing and mentoring the group (~10%) but also developing and leading a relevant research portfolio (~90%)
  • Assist the Materials Science and Technology leadership to implement the group’s scientific vision; develop group members to enable their career advancement
  • Assist staff in setting performance goals consistent with the group’s strategy and members’ long-term career goals. Provide feedback to address performance issues in a timely manner
  • Exceed expectations for the safe conduct of research. Ensure compliance with environment, safety, health and quality program requirements
  • Maintain strong dedication to the implementation and preservation of values, ethics and a diverse, welcoming community
  • Advance the reputation of the group members and global standing of the group as a whole through impactful research, Professional Society leadership and involvement, and organization of technical events.
  • Develop collaborations within and external to ORNL


Basic Qualifications:

  • A PhD in Physics, Materials Science, Chemistry, or a related discipline and a minimum of 10 years of expierence
  • Qualified candidates should have demonstrated experience in leading R&D teams
  • Experience with and understanding of the operation and maintenance of a crystal growth and condensed matter physics laboratories and/or expertise in crystal growth and materials characterization


Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience managing research projects dealing with fundamental materials synthesis and characterization and/or in collaboration with our technical domains, e.g. theory, electron microscopy, ect.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills
  • Demonstrated ability to manage teams of researchers to deliver world-leading materials research
  • Experience writing successful R&D proposals to multiple government agencies, e.g. DOE, DoD, and industry
  • Experience managing projects funded by the DOE Office of Science
  • Motivated self-starter with the ability to work independently and to participate creatively in collaborative teams across the laboratory 
  • Ability to function well in a fast-paced research environment, set priorities to accomplish multiple tasks within deadlines, and adapt to ever changing needs
