Overview:  

We are seeking an Assistant Technician who will focus on conducting corrosion experiments in extreme environments.  This position resides in our Corrosion Science and Technology (CST) Group, Materials in Extremes Section, Materials Science and Technology Division (MSTD), Physical Science Directorate (PSD), at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL).

Major Duties/Responsibilities: 

  • Design, construct, maintain, operate, and improve unique research equipment and systems involving high temperature, high pressure, and/or corrosive environments.
  • Maintain accurate and precise documentation of all laboratory research activities
  • Effective verbal and written communication with all group members, students, customers, and visitors
  • Professional interaction with craft personnel and supervisors to build and repair equipment to enable safe and timely operation
  • Ensure compliance with all environment, health, safety and quality requirements

Basic Qualifications:

  • A High School degree or GED with at least two years of experience in science/engineering; An AS degree or higher with less experience will also be considered.

 

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.
  • Motivated self-starter with the ability to work independently and to participate creatively in collaborative teams across the laboratory.
  • Ability to function well in a fast-paced research environment, set priorities to accomplish multiple tasks on time and adapt to evolving needs

 

Special Requirements:

  • Visa Sponsorship: Visa Sponsorship is not available for this position.
  • Export control, no clearance: This position requires access to technology that is subject to export control requirements. Successful candidates must be qualified for such access without an export control license.
  • Physical Requirements: Work involves various physical requirements and working conditions. As such, a pre-hire physical will be required after offer.
