We are looking for highly-motivated applicants for research and development (R&D) of cross section processing methods applied to nuclear reactor analysis. We are seeking an Assistant R&D Staff Member - Cross-Section Processing Methods Developer, who will support the Nuclear Transmutation & Decay Physics Group in the Nuclear Modeling and Simulation Development and Deployment Section, Nuclear Energy and Fuel Cycle Division, Fusion and Fission Energy and Science Directorate at ORNL. The Nuclear Transmutation & Decay Physics Group develops both application methodologies and simulation software to address national priorities in nuclear energy performance and safety. 

 

 

Major Duties/Responsibilities: 

 

  • Maintaining existing cross section capabilities and developing new cross section processing methodologies, including implementation within ORNL’s SCALE code system to support the US Nuclear Regulatory Commission and Department of Energy sponsor needs
  • Contributing to internal software testing and verification and validation (V&V) for the SCALE code system
  • Performing individual and collaborative R&D for complex problems and communicating the technical aspects of the work performed through publications and presentations
  • Effectively interacting with technical peers, program managers, and sponsors, both domestically and internationally, to meet the requirements of projects within scope, schedule, and budget
  • Developing leadership skills through contributions to organizational goals and mentoring of interns and post-graduate researchers

 

Basic Qualifications:

 

  • A Ph.D. in nuclear engineering or related discipline
  • Demonstrated knowledge/understanding of standard multi-group cross-section processing methods including resonance self-shielding methods such as Subgroup and Bondarenko methods, and equivalence theory such as Super Homogenization method
  • Knowledge of cross-section processing methods R&D applied to nuclear reactor analysis, as demonstrated through work experience and publications
  • Knowledge of deterministic transport methods such as collision probability, discrete ordinates, and method of characteristics applied to reactor physics analysis.
  • Sufficient scientific programming knowledge to maintain existing cross-section processing code, rapidly debug issues, and implement new methods
  • Excellent interpersonal skills including verbal, presentation, and writing skills
  • This position requires access to technology that is subject to export control requirements. Successful candidates must be qualified for such access without an export control license.

 

Preferred Qualifications:

 

  • Demonstrated experience with reactor analysis software using multi-group cross-section representation, such as SCALE/TRITON, SCALE/Polaris, VERA, CASMO, WIMS, Dragon, etc.   
  • Experience adding capability to a large, quality-assured code base
  • Modern software development experience with C, C++, and/or Fortran
  • Python programming experience for scripting and automation
  • Motivated self-starter with the ability to work independently and to participate creatively in collaborative teams across the laboratory 
  • Ability to function well in a fast-paced research environment, set priorities to accomplish multiple tasks within deadlines, and adapt to ever changing needs
