We are currently looking for a highly motivated Data Acquisition and Visualization Research Engineer to join our team! In this role, your primary focus will be on integrating data acquisition systems, sensors, and other related hardware and software combinations with the next generation of visualization technologies, such as virtual and augmented reality.

 

As a member of the Advanced Reactor Systems Group within the Advanced Reactor Engineering and Development Section of the Nuclear Energy and Fuel Cycle Division at ORNL, you will have the unique opportunity to collaborate with a multidisciplinary team of scientists and engineers in order to develop innovative solutions that advance fission, fusion, and other clean energy systems.

 

Major Duties/Responsibilities:

  • Collaborate with a multidisciplinary team of scientists and engineers to design, develop, and implement innovative solutions for integrating data acquisition systems, radiation detection equipment, as well as other instrumentation and controls with virtual and augmented reality technologies.
  • Explore and evaluate visualization tools and techniques at the forefront of technology finding opportunities to apply them in the context of sophisticated energy systems and nuclear or radiological facilities.
  • Develop software prototypes and applications that demonstrate the integration of data acquisition systems, instrumentation, control, and visualization tools for concise and effective presentations of real-world operational data.
  • Learn and develop a basic understanding of relevant subject matter areas and contextual nuance for a given project or application in which these visualization technologies would be implemented.
  • Document workflows, code, and relevant procedures that are developed as part of research efforts.
  • Conduct research and stay up to date with emerging technologies and trends in the fields of detector systems and advanced visualization techniques.
  • Provide relevant technical expertise and support to ongoing research projects, including the development of advanced reactor systems or their related supporting technologies. This could include areas such as instrumentation and controls, data acquisition, radiation detection, remote maintenance, or other related technologies.
  • Collaborate with external partners, industry experts, and academic institutions to cultivate innovation and leverage expertise in the field of energy system visualization.
  • Document and publish accomplishments and outcomes through project reporting, conference papers and presentations, and peer-reviewed journal publications.

Basic Qualifications:

  • A Bachelor or Master’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Nuclear Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, or a related field of study.

 

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Basic video game development and 3D modeling experience (Unreal Engine or Unity, Fusion 360, Solidworks, Blender, Maya, or equivalents) and understanding of advanced data visualization techniques and/or virtual and augmented reality technologies.
  • Experience in computer programming with languages such as C++, Python, MATLAB, C#, or equivalent, and with artificial intelligence and machine learning techniques.
  • Solid understanding of radiation, dose, and related sensors, instrumentation and controls systems and software environments.
  • Desire to develop and pursue technology innovation interests in related subject matter areas by pursuing competitively funded research to build a recognized and respected research program.
  • Motivated self-starter with the ability to work independently and to participate creatively in collaborative teams across the laboratory.
  • Ability to function well in a fast-paced research environment, set priorities to accomplish multiple tasks within deadlines, and adapt to ever changing needs.

 

Special Requirements:

Export control, no clearance: This position requires access to technology that is subject to export control requirements. Successful candidates must be qualified for such access without an export control license.
