Who are we looking for?

The Research and Development Systems Engineering (RDSE) Group in the Information Technology Services Division (ITSD) at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) seeks to hire a Data Engineering Team Lead. In this position, time will be divided between administrative activities managing staff supporting Data Engineering and setting direction and strategy for Data Engineering. The remining time will be spent on technical projects/operations supporting Data Engineering for customers/projects directly.

 

What will you be doing?

As a Technical Team Lead, you will be leading and supporting data/big-data research and operational teams with data engineering tasks. Staff charge directly to projects or programs, and not to a centralized budget. Our goal is to enable research while protecting ORNL assets.

 

You will be collaborating with highly diverse and multidisciplinary teams; from health informatics, geographers, mathematicians, physicists, computer scientists, and engineers in research, development, integration, testing, and deployment in areas including spatial computing, real-time data platforms, and machine intelligence systems.  You and your team will support research staff in disseminating results in peer reviewed journals, technical reports, relevant conferences, and open-source software project repos. You will work with researchers and project sponsors to capture, understand, integrate, and implement project and security requirements in developed services and software.

 

As a Technical Team Lead, your team will support data engineering for R&D projects across the laboratory. Members from this team will work directly with one or more research projects at any given time.  You will work with key stakeholders across projects and ITSD business relationship managers who support the research directorates to balance staff workload and technical delivery. You and your team will work closely with other technical leads for managing the pipelines and infrastructure for deploying your applications. The ability to provide metrics, strategy, and stay current with existing tooling and trends in the industry will be required.

Our team’s software stack and environment includes, but is not limited to: Python, Pandas, SQLAlchemy, Spark, Dask, Power BI, Tableau, and SQL.

 

Job Activities:

Staff management and project activities include:

  • Performance management, including creation of yearly performance and development plans, improvement plans (as needed), and year-end assessments.
  • Routine meetings with staff and program managers to understand current projects and roadblocks.
  • Assistance in removing any roadblocks (may require escalation).
  • Time and attendance oversight and approval.
  • Develop and manage training plan(s) and budget.
  • Work with staff and customers to develop and/or review solutions.
  • Hire/contract for additional staff necessary to support projects.
  • Provide reports as requested on staff delivery and project status.
  • Project management of informal to formal projects enabling on time, on scope, and on budget delivery.

 

Technical tasks vary greatly depending on the role. Some of those tasks could include:

  • Working through complex tasks or challenges with team members or research partners.
  • Collaborating with research teams to build out technical roadmaps.
  • Ensuring the secure and effective operation of computing systems through compliance with ORNL procedures and IT Internal Operating Procedures.
  • Developing and document data, date pipelines, and data flows, and procedures.

Basic Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree and 8 years of professional computing experience (or equivalent combination of education and experience).
  • A minimum of 5 years of experience operating in a professional data-intensive environment.
  • Experience with software development best practices including, but not limited to: Agile development; version control using Git/GitFlow or similar system; and project management via systems like JIRA, Asana, etc.
  • Experience with open-source tools and systems, and frameworks.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills suitable for communication with customers and management.
  • Good written and verbal communication skills0
  • Demonstrated ability to lead (projects, teams, etc.).

 

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience training and mentoring groups and individuals in complex technical environments.
  • Project planning and management experience.
  • Experience with big data and big data frameworks.

 

Special Requirements:

  • Visa SponsorshipVisa sponsorship is not available for this position.
  • Q clearance: This position requires the ability to obtain and maintain a clearance from the Department of Energy. As such, this position is a Workplace Substance Abuse (WSAP) testing designated position. WSAP positions require passing a pre-placement drug test and participation in an ongoing random drug testing program.
