Oak Ridge National Laboratory is the largest US Department of Energy science and energy laboratory, conducting basic and applied research to deliver transformative solutions to compelling problems in energy and security. We are seeking a Data Scientist who will support the CRID in the NNSD at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL).  


Major Duties/Responsibilities: 

  • Will contribute to build and research new data architectures
  • Will contribute to write white papers and proposals
  • Will contribute to publishing papers
  • Will collaborate in multi-disiplinary teams
  • Will participate in national and international forums to report and present R&D results

Basic Qualifications:

  • A BS in Data Science, Database Architecture, Computer Science or a related field and a minimum of 5 years experience. A combination of education and experience may also be considered.
  • Self-disciplined work ethic and eagerness to tackle challenging research problems


Preferred Qualifications:

  • Knowledgeable in full stack development (ELK, …)
  • Knowledgeable in Data Analytics
  • Knowledgeable in Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning
  • Has understanding of programming languages such as: Bash Script, MySQL, JavaScript, Python, R, SQL, and Spark
  • Experienced using tools such as VM Fusion, SQL management, SQL Plus, Toad, WinSCP, PUTTY, and GIT.
  • Strong understanding of data and system security controls including roles based access controls.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills
  • Motivated self-starter with the ability to work independently and to participate creatively in collaborative teams across the laboratory 
  • Ability to function well in a fast-paced research environment, set priorities to accomplish multiple tasks within deadlines, and adapt to ever changing needs

Special Requirements:

  • This position requires the ability to obtain and maintain an Secret Compartmented Information (SCI) clearance from the Department of Energy. As such, this position is a Workplace Substance Abuse (WSAP) testing designated position. WSAP positions require passing a pre-placement drug test and participation in an ongoing random drug testing program.  In addition, due the SCI, you may be also be subject to random polygraph testing.
