The Information Technology Services Division (ITSD) at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) is seeking highly-motivated individuals to join and contribute to ORNL’s CADES COVE environment which is comprised of multiple tenants performing research and analytics with data using high performance parallel compute, and an array of specialized computational appliances providing rare capabilities in data, such as graph analytics and deep learning vital to a variety of scientific domains. These computational services are backed by high-speed interconnects, parallel filesystems, and a distributed object store.  

You will work with the CADES Operational team, both maintaining existing services and contributing to the design and rollout of new services for the various research communities.  Due to the nature of the data, it will be required to get a Q/SCI level clearance.  


Major Duties/Responsibilities:  

Primary Responsibilities: 

  • Architecture design and maintenance of Distributed Storage, including distributed block storage, object storage, and file storage 

  • Build technology policy, engineering standards, methodologies, task-plans, and best practices for Storage Engineering 

  • Responsible for complex provisioning, advanced maintenance, data replication, disaster recovery, data migration, and documentation for our Storage and Backup environments 

  • Demonstrate a high level of technical expertise to support complex Storage & Backup devices, including SAN, NAS, and Backup solutions across all tiers 

  • Operate in complex HPC environment; that is highly-secure, highly-available, Research-centric datacenter and interact with other technology domain experts as required, to build and maintain the Storage and Backups solutions in the secure data center environment 

  • Write technical design and build documentation for storage infrastructure 

  • Using a blend of engineering and curiosity, understand and exploit currently unused features of existing storage related products to extract value from spent capital 

  • IO and stress test products and technologies to understand and verify their limits to increase understanding and improve stability 

  • Contribute to the design, configuration, and usage standards 

  • Work with both the incumbent and emerging vendor community to understand their technologies, offer feedback, and improve or customize solutions to benefit ORNL 

  • Automation expertise (SALT, Puppet, Ansible, etc.) 

  • Work with various ORNL teams and groups to test technology and features (examples block, NAS, object, network, Data Protection, Container, and Security) 

  • Ability to design and document disaster recovery plans and enforce backup and archival procedures 

  • Upgrade software, apply patches, and ensure physical security of data. 


Basic Qualifications  

  • 5+ years Professional Data Storage experience  

  • 2+ years of cluster environment experience 

  • 2+ years designing and documenting disaster recovery plans 

  • Ability to work with individuals at all levels and diplomatically manage customer expectations 

  • Ability to self-manage assigned tasks and projects 

  • Exceptional attention to detail  

  • Willingness to accept personal responsibility for client satisfaction  

  • Evaluate input and output for systems, as well as overall architecture, to recommend improvements 

  • Write documentation of data storage plans  



Preferred Qualifications:  

  • 10+ years Professional Data Storage experience  

  • 5+ years of cluster environment experience  

  • 5+ years designing and documenting disaster recovery plans 

  • Familiarity with version control systems (Git, SVN)  


This position requires the ability to obtain a HSPD12/PIV badge.  This position also requires the ability to obtain and maintain a clearance from the Department of Energy. As such, this position is a Workplace Substance Abuse (WSAP) testing designated position. WSAP positions require passing a pre-placement drug test and participation in an ongoing random drug testing program.
