Overview: 

We are seeking a Senior Mechanical Designer who will focus on the modeling and detailing of components and assemblies for major international fusion experimental facilities.  This position resides in the Fusion Engineering Group in the Fusion Energy Division at the Oak Ridge National Laboratory.

 

Major Duties/Responsibilities

  • Design, development and improvement of fusion technology related components using 3D Computer Aided Design (CAD) software. 
  • Collaboration with other designers, engineers, and physicists in the creation of 3D components and assemblies will be a regular function of the position. 
  • Create 2D drawings to be used for fabrication, and communicate with staff and suppliers through the fabrication and assembly process, and so will require the application of Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing (GD&T) and American Welding Society (AWS) notation. 
  • Manage CAD data, drawings, and other related design information (project database management), and may require directing and coordinating the work of other designers.

 

Basic Qualifications

  • An Associates Degree with 10+ years relevant experience or high school diploma with 12+ years experience
  • Experience with Creo or SolidWorks (training can be provided in either Creo or Solidworks but experience in one is essential)
  • Experience in GD&T and applicable standards, such as ASME Y14.5

 

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Familiarity with fabrication processes and design for manufacturability is highly desirable.
  • Proficiency in using both Creo and SolidWorks is preferred.  
  • Experience in the design of components related to fusion reactors and plasma physics experiments, diagnostics, cryogenics, piping, vacuum and radiation environments is preferred. 
  • Experience managing CAD data in a PDM environment (such as Vault or Windchill) is preferred.  Proficiency in using CATIA is beneficial.
  • Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal
  • Self-starter, able to work independently or in a team. 
  • Ability to function well in a fast-paced research environment, set priorities to accomplish multiple tasks within deadlines, and adapt to ever changing needs
