The Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) seeks an outstanding research leader for the position of Director of the Materials Science and Technology (MST) Division.  The MST Division couples basic and applied research to discover, design, and develop new materials and processes to provide improved energy technologies and processes relevant to energy efficiency, renewable energy, transportation, conservation, fossil energy, fusion energy, nuclear power and other energy technologies. Basic and applied research programs are focused on the thrust areas of:

• Theory and modeling at multiple scales
• Design synthesis of alloys, structural ceramics, and specialized crystals, functional thin films and nanostructures
• State-of-the-art characterization via electron microscopy, neutron scattering, and comprehensive physical and mechanical property measurements
• Interaction with extreme environments (temperature, corrosive media, radiation)
• Applied materials science and technology (such as structural materials, superconductivity, thermoelectrics, photovoltaics, energy storage, carbon fiber and composites, among others)
• Advanced manufacturing and materials processing (e.g., additive manufacturing, transient field processing, and others)

The MST Division is well-aligned with key areas of excellence at ORNL, including chemical sciences and interfacial processes, neutron science, nuclear science and engineering, energy technologies, and computation.  The MST Division has strong ties with the Center for Nanophase Materials Sciences, one of five Department of Energy national nanoscience user facilities; the Spallation Neutron Source; the High Flux Isotope Reactor, and the National Center for Computational Sciences.  With basic and applied research programs in materials sciences, opportunities for collaborative research across the national laboratory environment are abundant.  The MST Division also has extensive collaborations with outside universities and industry.

Major Duties/Responsibilities:

• Direct a leading materials research organization with broad capabilities in materials synthesis and processing, atomic- to macro-scale structural/physical characterization, and computational-based theory, modeling and simulation that spans basic and applied research and includes extensive collaborations with universities and industry
• Drive a vision for materials science and technology across MST and ORNL, identifying research opportunities in coordination with program offices and organizations inside and outside ORNL
• Ensure a stimulating environment for creativity and scientific excellence that will attract and retain outstanding research staff
• Manage resources and operations of a major research organization, identifying opportunities to enhance capabilities with respect to hiring staff, procuring equipment, and allocation of space
• Foster clear communications within and outside MST, highlighting technical achievements and staff recognition, identifying opportunities, and addressing issues of importance for the organization
• Mentor staff for professional success
• Promote a culture of safety and equality in the workplace
• Maintain strong commitment to the implementation and perpetuation of values and ethics

Basic Qualifications:
• A PhD in Physical Science, Materials Science, Engineering or closely related field
• A minimum of fifteen years of professional research experience beyond the doctorate in a university, industry, or national laboratory
• At least five years of experience leading multi-disciplinary research groups or organizations
• Extensive experience identifying key expertise and assembling scientifically balanced research and development teams, with a focus on multi-disciplinary research groups or organizations
• A distinguished record of research achievement, as evidenced by scholarly publications, patents, and/or funded research grants
• The ability to obtain and maintain a DOE L or Q clearance from the Department of Energy

Preferred Qualifications:
• A demonstrated record supporting the professional development of research staff
• Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal, and enjoy working in a team environment
• Ability to foster and maintain high standards in Environment, Safety, and Health (ES&H) and Quality Assurance for all of the Division’s activities

Special Requirements:
This position requires the ability to obtain and maintain a DOE L or Q clearance from the Department of Energy.
