Overview: 

We are seeking a Software systems engineer to participate in the creation of state of the art technologies used in a wide variety of engineering disciplines, ranging from networked, embedded controls used in transactive energy systems to unique virtualization technologies that host complex, operational software in non-real time simulations. Oak Ridge National Laboratory supports unique research needs for the Department of Energy and other Government agencies with goals ranging from improvements to energy efficiency, transitioning to renewable energy, improving the resiliency of the national electric infrastructure, and bolstering national defense. The Software systems engineer will play an integral role in proto-typing, demonstrating, and transitioning to production complex systems to meet these diverse objectives. This position resides in Systems Engineering and Cybernetics Group in the Computational Sciences & Engineering Division of the Computing & Computational Sciences Directorate at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL).  

 

As part of our research team, you will…

 

Major Duties/Responsibilities: 

  • Develop and contribute to requirements, designs, test plans, and development schedules for software elements in cyber-physical systems.
  • Create, maintain, and test program code for those software elements.
  • Support modelling and simulation activities to exercise software elements.
  • Support field exercises to demonstrate system capabilities.

 

Basic Qualifications:

  • A Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, Computer Engineering, or other field relevant to the job duties.
  • Competency in Python and C++ programming
  • Experience with mathematical programming tools (numpy, pandas, etc)
  • Database experience
  • Experience working with REST APIs and networking
  • Virtualization and cloud-based systems

 

Preferred Qualifications:

  • A Master's degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, Computer Engineering, or other field relevant to the job duties.
  • Experience with modelling and simulation of complex, interdisciplinary systems
  • Knowledge of computer architecture and experience with the development of virtualization technologies and/or computer system simulations
  • Excellent interpersonal skills for working within a highly diverse team, as well as strong oral and written communications skills, good organizational habits, and a high degree of personal motivation.
  • Experience with development and analyses of power system models, and a publications record in leading peer-reviewed journals.
