Overview: 

We are seeking a Process Control Designer to assist with the development and implementation of control drawing standards for the Process Control Systems at the Spallation Neutron Source (SNS).  High reliability system architecture and design techniques are utilized to ensure Personnel Safety and Process Control Systems meet the operational availability goals of the facility. The SNS Integrated Control System is large scale distributed control system based upon the Experimental Physics and Industrial Control System (EPICS) toolkit that is used to interface with Allen-Bradley Programmable Logic Controllers. These systems must be accurately documented for the maintainability of the facility to produce scientific research.

 

This position resides in the CF & Vacuum Controls Group in the Researce Accelerator Division, Neutron Sciences Directorate (NScD) at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL). The position reports to CF & Vacuum Controls Group Leader and works closely with members of the Process Control and Accelerator Operation Groups. Collaborates with control system experts to support Improvement Projects. Possess strong commitment to team environment dynamics with the ability to contribute expertise and follow leadership directives at appropriate times as well as work independently.

 

Major Duties and Responsibilities

  • Perform field walk-downs and as-builts of the existing control system at the SNS facility. Created new upgraded design drawing packages based on Allen-Bradley ControlLogix to replace the existing table I/O list format of documentation.
  • Support Process Control Design by perform field walk-downs and as-builts of the existing control system. Convert detail wire list into drawing packages consisting of documentation for control rack layout with B.O.M., power distribution drawings, wiring diagrams junction box layout, cable assembly drawings.
  • Also assisted panel shop personnel with questions during the assembly phase of control rack and or enclosure panels. Provide updates of design changes in the assemble phase to panel shop personnel to keep projects on schedule.
  • Provide Document Change Notification (DCN) support by creating drawing modifications or generation of new documentation.
  • Maintain documentation in central repository the Document Controls Center (DCC). Work with the DCC personnel to maintain proper revision control of drawings.
  • As a member of the Process Controls Team, work with members of the controls group to meet the accelerator power and reliability goals.
  • Ensure a safe and efficient work environment and compliance with ESH&Q procedures and programs.
  • Maintain a strong commitment to the implementation and perpetuation of professional values and ethics. Protect information integrity and maintain appropriate confidentiality on control system computers.

 

Basic Qualifications

  • Associate’s degree in Electrical or Electronics Technologies
  • 5 or more years of PLC-based Process Control Designer experience
  • An equivalent combination of relevant education and experience may be considered instead of an AS degree
  • Demonstrated proficiency with AutoCAD creating wiring diagrams, loop drawings, PLC layouts, and P&ID drawings
  • Demonstrated ability to translate wiring list or other forms of documentation into design drawings
  • Good written and verbal communication skills with demonstrated ability to communicate effectively with teams of scientists, engineers, and technicians

 

Preferred Qualifications

  • 5 or more years in Control Designer experience
  • Experience at a neutron user facility, synchrotron light source or other large-scale experimental physics project or user facility is highly preferred
  • Experience utilizing AutoCAD tools to create design documentation for with Allen-Bradley PLCs controls
  • Experience with control system architects and distributed I/O over ControlNet, DeviceNet, and Ethernet communication. Process Control Designer experience with special emphasis in process controls and safety systems
  • The ability to utilize Microsoft Excel spreadsheets to convert detail wiring list into I/O drawings and in some case as-built system with field walk downs
  • Have a good understanding of drawing revision / release control processes and be discipline in maintaining documentation in a central repository
  • Ability to develop relationships with customers, understand customer needs and translate these problems into best-fit design solutions.  
  • Ability to work independently with minimum supervision from managers and/or peers
