Overview:

We are seeking an entry level Electrical Engineer who will support the Electrical Power Conversion Group in the Research Accelerator Division (RAD), Neutron Sciences Directorate (NScD) at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL).  

  

As an Electrical Engineer you will support operation, maintenance, repairs, and upgrades of High Voltage Converter Modulator Systems, Magnet Power Supplies, Accelerator Beam Kickers, and High Voltage Beam Chopper systems in the Spallation Neutron Source (SNS) accelerator complex. This requires project and work planning; specification and procedure writing; system design, including validation testing; and equipment troubleshooting and repair.  You will report to the Electrical Power Conversion Group Leader and collaborate with the Electrical Power Conversion Group members, ORNL and SNS staff, professional peers, and collaborators from non-ORNL institutions, ORNL business services, vendors, and visitors. 

  

Major Duties/Responsibilities:  

  • Evaluate existing High Voltage Converter Modulators, magnet power supplies, kicker, and chopper systems to enhance performance, address limitations, improve availability and address obsolescence issues. 

  • Provide accelerator operations support for the SNS facilities operating around the clock, including occasional after hours call-in to achieve neutron production with at least 90% availability. 

  • Assist in planning, managing, and executing maintenance and upgrade work.  

  • Utilize work control tools to efficiently conduct these activities. 

  • Support the development of design, installation, training, testing, maintenance, and procurement documentation and procedures. 

  • Specify, develop, and procure subsystems and components. 

  • Present your work at conferences, workshops, collaboration meetings and sponsor reviews. 

  • Ensure compliance with environmental, safety, health, and quality program requirements. 

  • Work with other staff members to develop proposals to perform research on innovative accelerator electrical applications.

Basic Qualifications: 

  • A BS degree in electrical engineering or a related field. 

  • Solid understanding of analog and digital circuits and electric circuit theory. 

  

Preferred Qualifications: 

  • Basic understanding of power electronics, electromagnetic fields, and high-power semiconductor devices. 

  • Familiarity with troubleshooting electronic systems and using standard laboratory test equipment. 

  • Ability to create and maintain engineering documentation, including drawings, reports, and specifications. 

  • Experience with circuit simulation, mechanical CAD, and printed circuit board design tools. 

  • Knowledge of electrical safety principles and basic AC power distribution concepts. 

  • Strong communication skills and the ability to work effectively in a fast-paced, team-oriented environment.
