Overview: 

The Research Accelerator Division at the Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) seeks to hire an Electrical Technician.

The Research Accelerator Division’s mission is to safely and reliably operate the Spallation Neutron Source (SNS) accelerator and target, and to execute impactful accelerator R&D focused on SNS improvements and strategic opportunities, all in support of delivering neutrons for impactful scientific discovery.

 

As an Electrical Technician you will task lead maintenance activities performed by Electrical Research Mechanics for the Electrical Support Group responsible for executing and supporting electrical systems field work for the accelerator, target facility and neutron instrument systems at the SNS. You will prepare work packages, coordinate LTV, and assist in planning and scheduling of craft resources in maintaining and operating the Spallation Neutron Source. Electrical Technicians team with craft workers and other support personnel in task preparation and planning to ensure that work is conducted in a safe, secure, compliant, and efficient manner. You will work closely with other technicians, field supervisors, engineers, and scientists to ensure that maintenance and service needs of research and support organizations are met promptly and cost effectively.

 

Major Duties and Responsibilities: 

  • Establish and maintain a business culture that focuses on meeting the needs of research and support organizations, serving as an interface to ensure customers are fully informed about programmatic and corrective maintenance tasks, schedules, status, delays, etc. to minimize customer's operational impacts to ensures service needs of research and support organizations are met promptly and cost-effectively.
  • Task lead electrical activities required to support research and support activities at the Spallation Neutron Source.
  • Ensure work tasks are properly analyzed and graded according to ORNL work control procedures.
  • Contribute to outage work planning with scheduling and task preparation.
  • Develop work packages for tasks and procurement of materials.
  • Manage tasks within budgets and schedules in compliance with environmental, safety, health, and quality requirements.
  • Ensure work is conducted safely, securely and in compliance with Laboratory policies, standards, and procedures.
  • Participate in incident reporting, safety talks, audits, assessments, and ACTS where applicable.
  • Serve as Issuing Authority to administer Lock/Tag/Verify.
  • Serve as Lock/Tag/Verify coordinator in support of craft and subcontractor work.
  • Ensure completeness of records necessary to maintain configuration control, equipment history, continuous operations, and regulatory reporting.


Basic Qualifications:

  • An associate degree with at least 8 years of electrical experience or a high school diploma with a minimum of 10 years of electrical experience.
  • Knowledge of installation, troubleshooting, maintenance, and repair practices and procedures is required.
  • Familiarity with labor relations principles to include working within a union contract environment.
  • Ability to coordinate, plan, and schedule the work of others in installation, troubleshooting, maintenance, repair practices and operation of complex technical electrical and electronic equipment.
  • Functions, use, and care of tools and materials used in electrical work and equipment.
  • Safety precautions necessary when working on electrical systems and equipment.
  • Basic working knowledge of NFPA70E.

 

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Journeyman Certification or Associates degree in Electrical Engineering Technology or similar field.
  • Practices of construction, repair, and maintenance of electrical infrastructure.
  • Basic electronics, PLC and instrumentation.
  • Applicable laws and codes relating to electrical work.
  • Theories and practices of supervision.
  • Computer experience with standard software such as MS-Excel, MS-Word, and MS-Outlook.
  • Good interpersonal skills.
  • Organizational skills.
  • Ability to develop positive customer relations.

 

Other Job Requirements:
This position is a Workplace Substance Abuse program (WSAP) testing designed position which requires passing a

pre-placement drug test and participation in an ongoing random drug testing program in which employees are subject to

being randomly selected for testing. The occupant of this position will also be subject to an ongoing requirement to report to ORNL any drug-related arrest or conviction or receipt of a positive drug test result.

 

This position is subject to adverse weather conditions and is subject to emergency call back for after-hours work. 

 

Physical Requirements: Work involves various physical requirements and working conditions. As such, a pre-hire physical will be required after offer.
