Overview: 

We are seeking a Senior R&D Staff Member to focus on developing a world class research program in the area of electrochemical energy storage directed at materials and chemistry of solid-state batteries, interfaces, and other high capacity energy storage chemistries and systems. This position resides in the Energy Storage Group, Chemical Transformations Section, Chemical Sciences Division, Physical Sciences Directrorate at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL).  

 

As part of our multidiscipilinary energy storage research team, this position offers tremendous opportunity for undertaking cutting-edge R&D directed at developing synthesis and design of a new class of ion-conductors with stable interfaces and the ability to integrate this into device architectures for robust performance. The position provides ample scope for collaborating and interacting with synergistic energy storage teams at the Laboratory working on processing, scale-up, and manufacturing of energy storage systems. Oak Ridge National Laboratory also provides researchers with access to world-class user facilities, such as the Spallation Neutron Source (SNS) and Center for Nanophase Materials (CNMS) dedicated to advanced materials characterization.

 

Major Duties/Responsibilities: 

  • Develop a multi-disciplinary research program funded by external sponsors in area of solid-state electrolytes and electrochemical interfaces
  • Lead team of early career researchers working on storage  and develop capabilities and state-of-the -art energy storage laboratory
  • Develop research leadership in key thrusts areas of storage including thermal and chemical storage, electrochemcial reduction and conversion
  • Present and report research results and publish scientific results in peer-reviewed journals in a timely manner.
  • Ensure compliance with environment, safety, health and quality program requirements.
  • Maintain strong commitment to the implementation and perpetuation of values and ethics.

 

 

Basic Qualifications:

  • A Ph.D in Materials/Physical Chemistry, Materials Science or Chemical Engineering  or a related discipline with a minimum of 10 years of experience
  • Demostrated background in synthesis, design, and characterization of solid-electrolytes and all solid-state battereis
  • Experience in electrochemistry and application of electroanalytical methods to a number of storage systems

 

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Demonstrated leadership  polymer and/or ceramic electrolyte synthesis and processing
  • Strong expertise  in materials characterization techniques such as differential scanning calorimetry, dynamic mechanical analysis, small and wide-angle X-ray scattering and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction and neutron scattering
  • Technical leadership developing materials approaches for stable interfacial design and architectures for solid state batteries
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills
  • Motivated self-starter with the ability to work independently as well as demonstrate leadership to creatively participate in research project across the laboratory   
  • Ability to function well in a fast-paced research environment, set priorities to accomplish multiple tasks within deadlines, and adapt to ever changing needs
