Overview:
We are seeking an Elevator Inspector who will focus on scheduling inspection activities, as well as corrective and preventative maintenance. This position resides in Quality Measurement Services in the Facilities and Operations Directorate, at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL).
As part of our team, the Elevator Inspector will have overall responsibility for technical operations of enforcing code for inspection of equipment to ensure safety and health. Under general supervision, will be responsible for inspection work of considerable difficulty and supervisory work of average difficulty; and performs related work as required. Responsibilities require working with and technically supervising Bargaining Unit employees as an integral part of an inspection team. Inspected equipment includes, but is not limited to, elevators and vertical reciprocating conveyors. The Elevator Inspector teams with craft supervision, craft workers and other support personnel in task preparation and work planning to ensure that work is conducted in a safe, compliant, timely and efficient manner. The Elevator Inspector would be responsible for scheduling inspection activities, corrective maintenance, and preventive maintenance.

Major Duties/Responsibilities:

Verify that all required inspection steps are performed, documented, and reviewed for completeness.

Respond to changing business needs and priorities as well as sharing recommendations for improvements

Ensures new and existing installations comply with safety standards.

Assures that the design, installation, and safe operation of lifting-and-conveying devices conform to State and National laws and ordinances

Examines hoist way, and interlock system for proper functioning.

Examines electrical and mechanical features of elevator installations for conformance to safety regulations.

Observes running and safety test of elevators.

Triggers smoke detectors to determine if proper emergency services (i.e., alarm, sprinkler) are activated.

Inspects machine room for appropriate maintenance of equipment and machinery.

Visually inspects cable for wear or decrease in circumference.

Read and interpret code requirements and enforce those requirements with firmness, consistency, tact and courtesy.

Prohibits operation of lifting-and-conveying device if necessary.

May participate in and/or supervise bargaining unit employees in performing the inspection of cranes, hoists, dock levelers, and portable automotive lifting devices.

Develop cost estimates, quotations, work plans, materials procurement & deliveries and assist in managing projects within established budgets and schedules.

Promote and maintain a business culture that focuses on meeting the needs and support of craft workers and customers.

Serve in an important interface role to ensure that customers are fully informed about project costs, schedules, status, delays, etc.

Ensure that work tasks are properly analyzed and graded according to ORNL work control procedures.

Work closely with their counterparts to support administrative functions, training needs, timekeeping, workforce instruction & direction, performance evaluation and feedback, efficiency improvements, productivity improvements, etc. in support of the division agenda.

Organize and maintain spare parts inventory on an on-going basis.

Coordinate with supervisors and crews to ensure that proper levels of inventory are maintained.

Coordinate with ORNL Receiving on delivery of materials and organize them in orderly fashion.

The Elevator Inspector is also expected to serve as a relief supervisor.

Basic Qualifications:

Current certification as a QEI in accordance with ASME QEI-1 with 7 years of experience in inspection/construction of passenger or freight elevators, escalators, and/or moving walks. An equivalent combination of education and experience will be considered.

ASME QEI-1 certification must be maintained during employment.

A valid motor vehicle operators’ license.

Work will involve various physical requirements and certain working conditions and as such a post offer, pre-hire physical will be required.
Preferred Qualifications:
-
Currently licensed by the State of Tennessee per Tennessee Code Annotated 68-121-110 or certified in another state whose license is accepted by the State of Tennessee.

Excellent written and oral communication skills.

Motivated self-starter with the ability to work independently and to participate creatively in collaborative teams across the laboratory.

Ability to function well in a fast-paced research environment, set priorities to accomplish multiple tasks within deadlines, and adapt to ever changing needs.
Special Requirements:
Q or L clearance: This position requires the ability to obtain and maintain a clearance from the Department of Energy. As such, this position is a Workplace Substance Abuse (WSAP) testing designated position. WSAP positions require passing a pre-placement drug test and participation in an ongoing random drug testing program.
