Overview:
We invite applications for the position of Embedded Systems Hardware and Software Engineer to support the Sensors and Electronics Group in the Electrification and Energy Infrastructures Division (EEID). This position will support existing programs and developing new programs in areas involving electronics, sensors, embedded systems, and edge computing. Existing programs include radiation detection, RF communications and sensing, and emerging neuromorphic computing and sensing systems. The primary responsibilities of this position are to design, develop, and deploy, embedded systems for sensing and control. These responsibilities will be carried out through sensor design and selection, analog and digital circuit design, and software and firmware development.
Major Duties/Responsibilities
- Design, architect, and prototype electronics and embedded computing and sensing platforms
- Design custom bare-metal, RTOS, or Linux based embedded systems
- Implementing and testing signal processing algorithms that may involve machine learning, artificial intelligence, and emerging mixed analogue-digital or neuromorphic computing.
- Develop and design sensor interface electronics including analog circuit design
- Perform printed circuit board (PCB) schematic capture and layout
- Design systems that may incorporate commercial FPGA and custom digital logic
- Work with R&D teams to achieve successful outcomes according to project requirements
- Communicate with colleagues, customers, and end users effectively to establish system requirements
- Open to prepare white papers, proposals, and statements of work to attract new or continued funding
- Prepare and deliver presentations to sponsors, technical peers, and at professional society meetings
- Prepare journal and conference manuscripts for publications

Qualifications:
- B.S. or M.S. degree in Electrical Engineering or closely related discipline
- Experience with bare-metal, RTOS, or Linux embedded systems developed in C, C++, or Rust
- Experience with numerical or scientific computing using Python or MATLAB
- Experience with printed circuit board (PCB) design using EDA tools (e.g. Altium, OrCAD, KiCad)
- Experience with SPICE-based circuit simulation tools (e.g. NGSpice, LTSpice, PSpice)
- Experience/interest in implementing traditional ML and AI, or neuromorphic computing based algorithms is a plus
- Experience/interest in digital logic design with hardware description language such as SystemVerilog or VHDL is a plus
- Experience in technical writing to prepare reports and presentations
- Experience/interest in publishing research in scientific journals and conferences
- Demonstrated abilities to work cohesively with hardware/software design teams and project end users
- Strong communication and writing skills
Special Requirements:
This position requires the ability to obtain and maintain a security clearance, which requires US Citizenship.
