Overview: 

The Facilities Management Division at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) is seeking qualified applicants for the position of Energy and Sustainability Engineer. An Energy and Sustainability Engineer monitors energy, water, and resource consumption in buildings by collecting utility and operations data. They will use this information to conduct energy and sustainability analyses for the identification of lifecycle cost effective opportunities to increase building efficiencies, and minimize the social, environmental, and financial impacts of ORNL’s operation. This individual will guide the implementation of conservation measures and develop data analytics to inform and support the persistence of savings over time.

 

As part of our research team, you will…

 

Major Duties/Responsibilities: 

  • Implement and oversee the Fault Detection and Diagnostic (FDD) software applied to Building Automation System throughout the campus.
  • Installation of smart meters on various utilities
  • Support the establishment of a continual commissioning process at ORNL via support of FDD.
  • Define controls and monitoring devices needed to update equipment, processes, and systems to be able to implement building analytics.
  • Lead measurement and verification efforts by drafting measurement and verification plans, establishing appropriate data collection, performing necessary calculations and documentation on a periodic basis.
  • Improve energy efficiency and sustainability by developing energy and water conservation measures and supporting project implementation with technical guidance and oversight.
  • Be a leading member of implementing the DOE SmartLab program throughout ORNL.
  • Assist with reporting in response to calls from ORNL management, ORNL Sustainable ORNL, DOE Office of Science and the DOE Sustainability Performance Office as well as prepare technical reports that address these calls.
      • Specifically, be able to lead and develop site wide program and report supporting the ORNL Vulnerability and Resilience Plan (VARP).

Basic Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering or Industrial Engineering
  • A minimum of two years of relevant employment experience in engineering, sustainability, facilities management or other related experience.
  • Experience working in buildings identifying Energy Conservation Measures
  • Experience in commissioning and controls implementation.

 

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience with implementing a SkyFoundry SkySpark FDD system.
  • Experience with commissioning of equipment, processes, buildings, and control systems.
  • Experience or familiarity of the United States Green Building Construction (USGBC) LEED certification and/or the Guiding Principles for Sustainable Federal Buildings for both new and existing buildings.
  • Should possess strong verbal & written communication skills to present ideas, findings, and recommendations in a logical, concise manner.
  • Be a self-leader and work without constant direction.
  • Strong analytical background.
  • Proficient with Microsoft Excel, Word and PowerPoint.
  • Previous energy management, sustainability or facilities management or operations experience.
  • General knowledge and field experience with facility systems including building envelop, HVAC, electrical, and mechanical.

  • Physical Requirements: Work involves various physical requirements and working conditions. As such, a pre-hire physical will be required after offer.
