Overview:

Oak Ridge National Laboratory is the largest US Department of Energy science and energy laboratory, conducting basic and applied research to deliver transformative solutions to compelling problems in energy and security. The Environmental Sciences Division of Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) seeks a creative individual for an Energy-Engineering Data Analyst position in the Environmental Risk and Energy Analysis Group. In this role, the candidate will support a multi-disciplinary group of experts in economics, engineering, and physical sciences with advanced programming skills to translate research on hydropower, biofuel supply chains, hydrogen production, and carbon reduction technologies into products for industry and policy stakeholders' use.

 

Major Duties/Responsibilities:

You will work on projects evaluating sustainable energy metrics, such as costs, benefits, equity, land use change, and carbon reduction potentials. Activities will involve; 1) Collecting, integrating, and analyzing data from the above subject areas to validate and quantify trends or patterns identified by stakeholders using statistical methods and machine learning; 2) use of advanced programming skills to translate performance and cost models into visualizations, interactive analytical applications, and interpretive tools suitable for use by industry and policy stakeholders in decision making; and 3) contributions to reports, presentations, and peer-reviewed publications.

 

Basic Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree and 2+ years of work experience in a mathematical, statistical, computer science, engineering, economics, or related quantitative field; OR Master’s degree in an advanced mathematical, statistical, computer science, engineering, economics, or related quantitative field.
  • Experience in at least three of the following areas: 1) engineering analysis or design; 2) data analysis and visualization, database management; 3) advanced use of R and/or Python programming language; 4) machine learning and/or statistical modeling; 5) parallel computing.
  • Strong oral and written communication skills.
  • Ability to work independently and interact with a multi-disciplinary group.

 

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Civil/Mechanical engineering background and experience.
  • Strong R and or Python programming skills with interactive application design experience.
