Overview:

The Executive Communications Group within the Communications Division at Oak Ridge National Laboratory seeks an experienced communications professional and content creator to support the Partnerships Office, Office of Institutional Strategic Planning, Office of Integrated Performance Management, and the Office of the Laboratory Director with the development of strategies and products that effectively communicate to diverse stakeholders. The ideal candidate will possess experience across a range of communications disciplines, including writing, social media, digital media, and presentations.

 

Major Duties/Responsibilities:

  • Work closely with colleagues in the Executive Communications Group to provide responsive and strategic support to offices reporting to the Office of the Laboratory Director.
  • Work with the Partnerships Communications Coordinator, Technology Transfer Division staff, and Information Technology Services Directorate to implement improvements to the division’s internal and external websites, including use of a keyword system, sourcing and creating high-impact imagery, and updating technology web pages with new content.
  • Execute strategies for marketing lab-developed technologies to potential partners through creative and compelling multimedia storytelling including writing news and feature stories, editing technology marketing summaries, and creating content for digital and social media platforms.
  • Work with the Communications Coordinator and staff from the Office of Institutional Strategic Planning and Office of Integrated Performance Management to provide writing, editing, and general communications support to ensure the effective development and delivery of products including internal announcements, marketing materials, strategic documents, reports, presentations, and web content.
  • Interact with colleagues across ORNL Communications to ensure clear, concise, and consistent messaging across products and channels.
  • Strengthen internal and external branding through consistent messaging across platforms and by applying ORNL styles/standards to internal and external communications products.

Qualifications Required:

  • A BS degree and a minimum of 5 years of progressive experience in communications-related positions.
  • Candidate must be self-motivated and self-directed while integrating direction and preferences from clients into the execution of all tasks.
  • Excellent written and oral communications skills as well as excellent interpersonal skills are required.
  • Proficiency in web content management systems, digital analytics, word-processing and presentation software, and social media.
  • Experience working with senior leaders or executives and the confidence to fulfill urgent requests in a timely and professional manner are essential.
  • Must possess the ability to prioritize tasks and meet deadlines in a deadline-driven environment.
  • Must have the ability to work both independently and with all levels of staff in a team-based environment.
  • Must possess strong problem-solving skills and the ability to develop and implement solutions.
  • Creativity, attention to detail, and a desire to collaborate are essential, as is the ability to balance multiple demands and perform professionally and capably under pressure.

 

Qualifications Preferred:

  • Ability to develop, update, and maintain informative and compelling website content, adhering to a consistent schedule to keep information fresh and encourage return visits. Strategically analyze and report site metrics, and benchmark laboratory and industry best practices to maximize site and content effectiveness for relevant audiences.
  • Ability to organize and analyze information from various scientific and often highly technical sources, including interviews with subject matter experts and review of published scientific papers, to produce content in concise and approachable language without loss of technical meaning.
  • Ability to support communications projects from concept to completion within deadlines and in collaboration with other team members.
  • Excellent scientific/technical reading, writing, and editing skills.
  • Experience with Drupal and SharePoint content management systems.
  • Experience with email marketing platforms such as MailChimp, Emma, or Constant Contact.
  • Knowledge of planning, coordinating, and implementing effective communications campaigns.
  • Previous experience with DOE and the national laboratory system.
  • Previous experience in science writing.

 

Work Directions and Interfaces:

This position will report to the Manager of the Executive Communications Group and will work with all members of the Executive Communications Group and clients across ORNL.
