Summary: 

The Nuclear and Extreme Environments Measurements (NEEM) Group within the Fuel Development Section (FDS), Nuclear Energy and Fuel Cycle Division (NEFCD), Fusion and Fission Energy and Science Directorate, Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL), seeks applicants for a research professional with emphasis in harsh environment experiment design, nuclear instrumentation, and sensors development.

 

The primary function of this open position is to lead high-impact research projects focused around designing and executing experiments that require advanced instrumentation techniques, data acquisition, and data visualization. The selected candidate will be a scientific leader supervising a small team of researchers including staff and postdocs. Scientific output, program development, and international visibility will be an emphasis throughout these activities.

 

Job Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Design experiments to characterize the sensors and test them under difficult conditions, including elevated temperatures, chemically aggressive environments, physical constraints, and neutron and gamma irradiation
  • Experiment design could include mechanical design, structural or thermal analysis, and determination of the appropriate sensors and control systems
  • Develop sensors and sensing algorithms to measure a wide range of parameters such as pressure, temperature, flow, corrosion, microscale displacement, etc. in both standard laboratory as well as radiological/hot cell environments
  • Grow existing research programs and obtain funding to support new ground-breaking extreme environment measurements
  • Supervise and mentor students, postdocs, and other technical staff
  • Produce high impact publications and conference presentations in the field of nuclear experiments, write programmatic technical reports, patents, lead in proposals, and estimate costs
  • Advise organizational leadership on strategic opportunities and research priorities as driven by sponsor interests 

 

Qualifications Required:

  • PhD in engineering, physics, or related fields, and 4+ years of post graduate experience, a MS and 8 years of experience, a BS and  10 years of experience
  • Excellent communication skills, including verbal, presentation, and writing skills, are required to enable effective interaction with technical peers and program managers
  • Track record of high impact publications and conference presentations in the field of nuclear materials
  • This position requires the ability to obtain and maintain a clearance from the Department of Energy. As such, this position is a Workplace Substance Abuse (WSAP) testing designated position. WSAP positions require passing a pre-placement drug test and participation in an ongoing random drug testing program.

 

Qualifications Desired:

  • The ideal candidate will have experience working with advanced sensor systems, data acquisition and processing, and control systems and proven analytical skills
  • Experience with data analysis and visualization
  • Familiarity with mechanical design, thermal or fluid analysis
  • Familiarity with nuclear science
