Overview:

The Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) Nuclear Fuel Element Performance (NFEP) Group is hiring an Experiment Planner & Post -Irradiation Examination Engineer!

 

The NFEP Group resides within the Nuclear Fuel Development (NFD) Section of the Nuclear Energy and Fuel Cycle Division. This highly technical position supports irradiated materials testing and post-irradiation examination (PIE) activities. NFEP is a cross-disciplinary team of nuclear engineers and materials scientists. We are committed to leveraging neutron irradiations for exploring new fuels and materials. Through ground breaking research and experimentation, the group supports the development of emerging nuclear power technologies for current and advanced reactors.

 

In this role, you will be responsible for technical project management, data compilation and analysis, and preparation of technical documents and reports ensuring the successful execution of material irradiations and post irradiation examinations (PIE). Periodic reporting, project tracking, and cross coordination of experiments across many organizations are other duties in this role. Additional activities include organizing reactor build test matrix, QA documentation, user proposal reviews, and oversight of hot cell disassembly and PIE.

 

This role supports many programs including the Department of Energy Office of Nuclear Energy Advanced Fuels Campaign and Nuclear Science User Facility Program on irradiation and post irradiation activities at ORNL. The diverse testing programs explore impacts of irradiation on material properties including mechanical, microstructural, and thermophysical. The selected individual will be encouraged to engage with research staff within the NFEP Group, NFD section, and supporting ORNL organizations to foster a vibrant research atmosphere focused on successful mission execution and continued growth of capabilities and expertise for pioneering nuclear fuels research.

 

Major Duties/Responsibilities:

  • Technical Project Management: Effectively manage and lead all aspects of material irradiations and PIE projects, ensuring successful execution and timely completion.
  • Data Compilation and Analysis: Gather, organize, and analyze data acquired from pre- and post-irradiation material examinations.
  • Cross-Organization Coordination: Collaborate with multiple organizations, facilitating smooth coordination of experiments and strengthening working relationships.
  • Hot Cell Disassembly and PIE Oversight: Supervise and manage the disassembly process in the hot cell, ensuring safe and efficient post irradiation examinations.
  • Project Documentation, Reporting, and Tracking: Prepare technical documents and periodic comprehensive reports on experiment planning, progress, and final results including maintaining diligent project tracking to meet established goals.
  • QA Documentation: Ensure compliance with quality assurance (QA) documentation standards to uphold high-quality standards in testing procedures.
  • User Proposal Reviews: Participate in user proposal reviews, evaluating proposed projects and ensuring feasibility of the technical plan.

Basic Qualifications:

  • A Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Nuclear Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Materials Science, or a related field of study is required.
  • Experience with material testing: mechanical, microstructural, or thermophysical property measurements.

 

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Proven track record of effectively maintaining order and structure in work processes.
  • Proven ability to minimize errors and ensure accuracy in reporting.
  • Demonstrated excellence in written and oral communications.
  • Experience with nuclear materials and hot cell operations.
  • Experience with CAD design and engineering drawings.
  • Evidence of success in independently driven outcomes and through contributions to collaborative teams.
  • Demonstrated ability to function well in a fast-paced research environment, set priorities to accomplish multiple tasks within allowable timeframes, and adapt to constantly evolving needs.
