The Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) Advanced Fuel Fabrication (AFF) Group is seeking a hands-on individual to join their research team to support the fabrication and characterization of coated particle fuel forms, and other ceramic and metallic coatings produced by gas deposition systems, such as chemical vapor deposition (CVD).

 

The AFF Group is a global leader in the fabrication of next generation nuclear fuels, high temperature ceramics, and radioisotope sorbents. This position would support the fabrication of ceramic and metallic coatings in support of DOE-funded programs and in close collaboration with industry. Functions will include laboratory operation support such as instrument and equipment design, installation, configuration, repair, maintenance, and calibration. Relevant systems include but are not limited to metallography, CVD and chemical vapor infiltration (CVI) equipment, and high temperature furnaces. The position is also expected to support general laboratory activities such as radiological waste operations, safety and hazard reviews, and inventory control. Characterization support is another primary focus of this position, for example, coating thickness, particle size and shape and materials property analysis. Regular interactions with program management to plan and execute strategic objectives is necessary. The individual is expected to take responsibility over key laboratory operation protocols and maintain functionality of key instrumentation and equipment. The successful candidate will strongly collaborate with staff within the AFF and the Nuclear Fuel Development section to drive innovation on fuel fabrication and the development of novel materials for nuclear applications.

 

Major Duties/Responsibilities: 

  • Support the design, installation, operation, and upkeep of equipment in radiological materials laboratories dedicated for fuel fabrication of coated particle fuel technologies.
  • Support fabrication and characterization activities in the laboratories dedicated for fuel fabrication.
  • Support laboratory operations by maintaining safety protocols and documentation.
  • Collaborate with team members in the areas of fabrication, property measurements, and other relevant areas to advance science-based understanding of nuclear fuels materials.
  • Perform work according to specific rules and requirements for QA, nuclear material control, radiological work, and general laboratory safety.

Basic Qualifications:

  • B.S. or M.S. in chemistry, materials science, chemical engineering, nuclear engineering, or a related field.
  • Experience in a research and development laboratory setting.

 

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience in engineering design using CAD software 
  • Strong mechanical aptitude and experience with furnaces, vacuum, and gas delivery system
  • A background in materials science or chemistry with a focus on ceramic materials synthesis and characterization
  • Experience with CVD/CVI processes, equipment, and operation thereof
  • Experience with data handling
  • Experience managing resources in laboratory setting
  • Demonstrated ability to function well in a fast-paced research environment, set priorities to accomplish multiple tasks within deadlines
  • Capacity to effectively work within a team to support a common goal

 

Special Requirement:

This position requires access to technology that is subject to export control requirements. Successful candidates must be qualified for such access without an export control license.
