Fusion Engineer in Helium Gas Cooling - Senior R&D Staff

Date: Oct 16, 2021

Location: Oak Ridge, TN, US, 37830-8050

Company: Oak Ridge National Laboratory

Requisition Id 6584

The Fusion Energy Division (FED) at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) invites applicants for a high-pressure Helium Gas Cooling position in Fusion Blankets and Enginneering Design. The FED is developing the technical basis for the first fusion nuclear facility and involves a number of disciplines, particularly helium gas cooling.   A high pressure helium flow loop experiment is being completed, and this is coupled to extensive computations to explore the helium flow behavior and corresponding thermal performance in both test articles and also future fusion blankets and other fusion core components. We seek individuals with advanced technical, analytical, and experimental skills who can lead both experimental and computational activities.

Major Duties/Responsibilities:

The successful candidate will be involved in both developing new and applying existing models and simulation tools to understand fusion blanket processes and their design optimization.  This is concentrated on helium computational fluid dynamics, but may involve thermal hydraulics, mass and heat transfer, materials, and hydrogen behavior.  In addition, leading and participating in helium experiments, as well as providing development of the experiment hardware is expected.  The selected candidate will be responsible for interaction with division staff and the many external collaborators that work with the ORNL research group. The candidate will be expected to work independently, lead, perform and collaborate on associated experiments, fully document work in technical reports and publications, effectively interface with project sponsors, and lead the identification and development of research proposals.

Basic Qualifications:

  • A Ph.D. in Nuclear Engineering, Thermal-Mechanics, Fluids, Material-engineering interface or a closely related field and 6 years of experience

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Simulation/design and experimental experience
  • Experience in the development and application of complex engineering codes
  • Familiarity with nuclear systems
  • Engage and lead, as well as participate on multi-institutional and multi-discipline design teams
  • Excellent verbal, presentation, and writing skills to enable effective interaction and communication with technical peers, program managers, collaborators, and sponsors
  • A proven publication record

This position will remain open for a minimum of 5 days after which it will close when a qualified candidate is identified and/or hired.

We accept Word (.doc, .docx), Adobe (unsecured .pdf), Rich Text Format (.rtf), and HTML (.htm, .html) up to 5MB in size. Resumes from third party vendors will not be accepted; these resumes will be deleted and the candidates submitted will not be considered for employment.
