Overview:  

We are seeking a Garage Supervisor who will focus on government equipment and vehicle maintenance.  This position resides in the Fleet and Transportation Group in the Logistical Service Division, Facilities and Operations Directorate, at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL).

Major Duties/Responsibilities: 

  • Establish and maintain a business culture that focuses on safety, compliance, and meeting the needs of customers in a safe and environmentally compliant manner at ORNL

  • Plan, schedule and coordinate the work of others in providing program maintenance, repairs and inspection on both vehicles and heavy equipment

  • Serve as the primary customer interface on vehicles and equipment issues and ensure that customers are fully informed about schedules, status, delays, etc.

  • Responsible for the preparation of applicable work plans, lift plans, and procedures

  • Develop cost estimates and schedules for vehicle/equipment projects and manage projects within budgets and schedules

  • Responsible for the supervisory administrative functions including training needs (present and future), timekeeping, absence control, performance evaluation and feedback, etc.

  • Provide clear vision, prioritization, accountability, and create a culture as outlined in the Safe Conduct of Research Principles

  • Plan for both near- and long-term needs, anticipate and forecast operating costs, and manage budgets while incorporating reliability, sustainability and efficiency into operations

  • Ensure that work tasks are evaluated for safety and/or risks following ORNL work control procedures

  • Balance customer needs with resources available

  • Improve operation efficiency through implementation of technology and best practices while working with other business partners

  • Fosters an open and supportive staff working environment without fear of retribution or reprisal

  • Implement and establish staff performance goals; evaluate progress and feedback; address performance issues in a professional and timely manner

Basic Qualifications:

  • A HS diploma or equivalent.

  • A minimum of 9 years of experience in garage operations.

 

Preferred Qualifications:

  • A BS degree in relevant field

  • A basic working knowledge of OSHA policies and principles

  • Experience/familiarity with labor relations principles to include working within a union contract environment

  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.

  • Motivated self-starter with the ability to work independently and to participate creatively in collaborative teams across the laboratory.

  • Ability to function well in a fast-paced research environment, set priorities to accomplish multiple tasks within deadlines, and adapt to ever changing needs.
