The Remote Sensing and Environmental Informatics Group at the Oak Ridge National Laboratory is looking for a Geospatial Data Analyst to join our team.  This position supports the Spruce and Peatland Responses Under Changing Environments (SPRUCE) project,  HydroSource project , and the ORNL Distributed Active Archive Center for Biogeochemical Dynamics (ORNL DAAC).  

 

Job Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Perform quality assurance, metadata development, and documentation development to ensure the prompt and accurate publication of data from the SPRUCE project, in collaboration with project staff collecting that data.
  • Perform complex GIS analysis to design and develop data models, interactive maps, visualizations, and dashboards that integrate data in various formats and from various sources related to the HydroSource project.
  • Use mapping and statistical software (e.g. GIS, Python, SQL Server, R) to manage and manipulate complex hydropower related data for use in web mapping applications and provide geographic data management to the HydroSource project.
  • Collaborate with data providers to understand geospatial and tabular data being submitted to the ORNL DAAC.  Ensure that the data are scientifically correct and conform to established best practices, such as the Climate and Forecasting convention for netCDF files.
  • Collaborate with data providers and other ORNL DAAC staff to develop guide documents and other forms of data documentation for submitted data.
  • Collaborate with other ORNL staff and the broader Earth sciences community to contribute towards the evolution of best practices and data standards.
  • Contribute to the quality assurance, documentation, and publication of Earth system science data from other ORNL projects, depending on need and availability. 

 

Minimum Requirements:

  • Masters degree or higher in a science or engineering field, with an Earth science degree preferred.
  • Experience working with ecological and/or hydropower related data, with ecological field experience particularly preferred.
  • At least 1 year of experience with geospatial data and GIS systems.  Experience with both open-source GIS tools, such as GDAL and QGIS, and commercial tools, such as Esri Arc/GIS, is particularly preferred.
  • Experience in collection, quality assurance, and/or management of environmental science, hydrology, or ecology data.
  • Demonstrated success working in a collaborative environment.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

 

Experience in any of the following areas is relevant to this position and should be highlighted in the application materials:

  • Practical experience working with metadata to describe datasets.  Experience with ecological, climate, or geospatial metadata is particularly preferred, such as the NASA Unified Metadata Model, Ecological Markup Language, Darwin Core, or ISO 19135.
  • Practical experience working in a Linux command line environment, with shell scripting experience particularly preferred. 
  • Practical experience working with R and/or Python for data analysis.
  • Experience working with remotely sensed data, including airborne and on-orbit platforms.
  • Experience working with data collected for research purposes.
  • Experience preparing data for and/or consuming data from geospatial web services, such as the Open Geospatial Consortium (OGC) Web Coverage Service (WCS) and Web Mapping Service (WMS) protocols.
  • Experience preparing data for and/or consuming data from Data Access Protocol (DAP) services, such as OPeNDAP Hyrax or Unidata THREDDS software packages.
  • Demonstrated experience showing strong critical thinking and problem-solving skills.
