Overview:

The Geospatial Science and Human Security Division is seeking the technical support of a Geospatial Scientist within the Human Geography group. This position is within the Division’s Human Dynamics section and part of the National Security Science Directorate. The Human Geography Group develops data, models, and computational approaches utilizing Earth observation, measurement, statistics, and digital traces to provide insights into human activities within the built and natural environment, from local to global scales.

The Geospatial Scientist will support and lead geospatial research in collaboration with teams of scientists exploring and developing novel ways in how people interact within the physical landscape; whether it’s the built or natural environment and at scale.  In addition, the Geospatial Scientist will have the opportunity to engage in research about temporal changes in the built environment through development of data driven methods that seek to explore past, current and future human and environment interaction.   The Geospatial Scientist will also work closely with project teams to engage in data exploration, spatial analysis activities, and other solutions that will support Federal Government research missions.

Major Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Perform and support analysis of various geospatial datasets, from multiple sources, at multiple scales, and across many spatiotemporal resolutions, to meet the needs of research projects.
  • Develop tools and scripts to support population models and workflows.
  • Support development of platforms for geospatial data visualization and analysis
  • Lead and support publications to share innovative research with the scientific community.
  • Regularly attend conferences to engage with the scientific community.

 

Basic Requirements:

  • M.S. or higher with a minimum of 2 years of relevant experience.
  • Degrees in relevant fields such as Geography, Data Science, Computer Science or related field.
  • Proficiency in data visualization and analysis including use of open source or commercial geospatial tools such as ArcGIS, QGIS, and PostGIS.
  • Experience with Python, R, and/or other similar languages for data manipulation, exploration, and statistical analysis.
  • Experience with development or management of platforms for data discovery, analysis, and visualization to openly share data with the broader geospatial user community or subsection of users.
  • Experience manipulating large scale human and physical geospatial data including administrative boundaries, census and survey data, land use/land cover data, Earth observation, and infrastructure inventories.
  • Knowledge of spatial data theory and concepts.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication and demonstrated ability to work in interdisciplinary teams.

 

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience in developing computational and machine learning methods to exploit large geospatial datasets.
  • Experience with digital trace data in exploration and development of population models based on human movements.
  • Experience working with version control systems such as Git.
  • Experience with database technologies such as PostgreSQL, SQL Server, and Esri Geodatabases to store, analyze, and manipulate geospatial data.
  • Experience in statistics, socioeconomic indicators of human security, spatiotemporal event data, and exploitation of social media.
