The Remote Sensing and Environmental Informatics Group seeks a Geospatial Software Engineer to join our team to support multiple hydropower and bioenergy-related projects. 

 

Job responsibilities:

  • Full stack software development to enable the discovery, analysis, visualization, and downloading of geospatial data.
  • Geospatial data analysis and visualization, particularly to support the quality assurance of data being ingested into the software systems being developed by the team.

 

Basic Qualifications

 

  • Masters degree in a science or engineering discipline, with disciplines related to hydrology or ecology particularly preferred, or Bachelors degree in a science or engineering discipline and at least three years relevant experience.
  • At least two years practical experience as a full-stack software developer working with Earth science-relevant applications, including experience displaying and manipulating geospatial data.  Experience working with hydrology or ecology-relevant applications and data is particularly preferred. 
  • Demonstrated experience working in a team software development environment, contributing to shared goals.
  • Practical experience in two or more of the following languages: TypeScript, Python, CSS, bash, R, SQL, or perl.  Python, TypeScript, and CSS experience are particularly preferred.
  • Practical experience working with developing maps and visualizations of geospatial tools.
  • Practical experience with software development using git.
  • Effective communication skills, including writing documentation, developing and analyzing use cases, and presenting results to colleagues.
  • Demonstrated ability to learn new material and technology rapidly and put that learning into effective practice.

 

Preferred Qualifications

 

Experience in any of the following areas is relevant to this position and should be highlighted in application materials.    

  • Formal degrees or training programs working with geospatial data and geospatial information systems.
  • Experience working with the React framework.
  • Storing and retrieving geospatial data using databases, with PostGIS experience particularly relevant.
  • Linux command line experience, particularly including shell scripting and software development/deployment.
  • Jupyter notebooks for scientific applications, particularly using notebooks as learning resources for end users
  • Implementing and consuming REST Application Program Interfaces, with experience using geospatial APIs (such as Open Geospatial Consortium web services) particularly relevant.
  • Containerization, particularly working with Docker.
  • Public cloud infrastructure, with Amazon Web Services experience particularly relevant.
  • Software documentation, including documentation derived from source code
  • Software user experience design and usability assessment.
  • Contributing to large, complex software systems.
  • Scientific data visualization and/or scientific data analysis.
  • Data or information architecture, including database design.
