Overview:
As a research engineer you will develop and support the testing and implementation of sensors for smart grids of the future. To address the challenges caused by the penetration of distributed energy resources (DERs) and electric vehicles (EVs), increased deployments and intelligent applications of sensors are required to ensure grid health, fault recovery, and resiliency. As an applicant for the position of Grid Sensors R&D Engineer, you are expected to have a practical background in power engineering and a desire to advance the state of the art in medium-voltage and novel sensors for grid operations. You will work alongside senior staff and team members to further advance an established testbed and field deployments at substations and distribution grids. Additionally, you will be responsible for collecting, processing, and transferring continuous and event data to other team members for analysis. Both experimental and programming skills will be required as well as an overall understanding of grid operations.
Major Duties/Responsibilities:
- Design, prototype and apply instrumentation to characterize grid sensors
- Select and develop analog sensor interfaces including wide-bandwidth signal conditioning electronics
- Select and implement commercial data-acquisition equipment for testbed uses
- Perform programming to record and replay waveform data for sensor and event testing
- Prototype and package data-acquisition equipment for field deployment
- Install and maintain field deployed equipment
- Use remote access to ensure continuous operation and data collection
- Communicate with utilities to correlate events recorded by multiple sensors
- Help prepare white papers, proposals, and statements of work to attract new collaborators and funding
- Prepare and deliver presentations to sponsors, technical peers, and at professional society meetings
- Help prepare journal and conference manuscripts for publications
- Help prepare technical reports for sponsors, program managers, and technical peers
- Work with R&D teams and work towards leading R&D teams to achieve successful outcomes according to project requirements
Basic Qualifications:
- B.S. or M.S. degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, or a related discipline with a minimum of five years of experience (B.S.) or 2 years of experience (M.S.)
- Experience in applying data-acquisition equipment for sensor interfacing and signal processing
- Experience with LabVIEW programming
- Experience preferred with Unix, Linux, Python and C
- Experience in technical writing to prepare reports and presentations
- Experience/interest in publishing research in scientific journals and conferences
- Demonstrated abilities to work cohesively with hardware/software design teams and project end users
- Excellent communication skills
Special Requirements:
This position requires the ability to obtain and maintain a security clearance.
