The Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) is a U.S. Department of Energy science and energy laboratory, conducting basic and applied research to deliver transformative solutions to compelling problems in energy and security. The ORNL mission portfolio integrates a diverse array of high hazard nuclear facilities, high energy particle accelerators, radiation generating devices, research/production reactor and user facilities to serve the national and international scientific communities.  The Nuclear and Radiological Protection Division (NRPD) is seeking a Group Leader for the Dosimetry Services Group to provide technical management and program leadership for the implementation of applicable Federal Regulations and Department of Energy Laboratory Accreditation Program (DOELAP) Standards in support of the ORNL Science Mission.


The position reports to the NRPD Director and is responsible for supervising a multidisciplinary team of professionals and technicians who provide internal and external dosimetry services to meet the growing and diverse science mission at ORNL.


Major duties/responsibilities


The position is responsible for managing a team of internal and external dosimetry specialists, in vivo and in vitro radiobioassay subject matter experts, radiochemists, and radiochemistry laboratory technicians to maintain and advance internal and external dosimetry programs in compliance with 10 CFR 835 and the Radiological Protection Management System.  The position interfaces with NRPD Radiological Protection Operations staff and DOE Oak Ridge Site Office (OSO) staff to ensure that the dosimetry program capabilities keep pace with the challenging and expanding nuclear mission.  


Specific responsibilities include:


  • Maintain close transparent working relationships with DOE-OSO staff involved in radiological protection program oversight
  • Develop policy recommendations for implementing revised regulatory requirements, consensus standards, etc.
  • Ensure analytical results, dose evaluations/assessments, and reports are of the highest accuracy and quality
  • Manage and direct dosimetry functions, including operations of the External Dosimetry TLD Laboratory, the Dosimetry Distribution Center, the Whole-Body Counting Laboratory, the Radiobioassay Laboratory and Dose Assessments
  • Maintain DOELAP accreditation for personnel dosimetry and radiobioassay operations and serve as the ORNL point-of-contact
  • Ensure compliance with regulatory reporting requirements including the generation, review, and submittal of the annual REMS report and issuance of personnel occupational exposure reports
  • Supervise the development and implementation of innovative radiochemical separation and nuclear counting techniques for radionuclides unique to ORNL’s research and development mission
  • Oversee and approve the development and maintenance of programmatic documentation including technical manuals, technical basis documents, quality manuals, standard operating procedures, work guidance, and other similar documents
  • Administer a quality management program including periodic reviews, issuance of quality assurance and quality control reports, software quality assurance reviews, and other quality related operations
  • Ensure that work is carried out safety, securely, and in compliance with ORNL policies, standards, and procedures
  • Participate in, and review results of, external and internal audits/assessments and ensure that effective corrective actions are developed and implemented in a timely manner
  • Manage Dosimetry Services Group budget and ensure resources are appropriate




  • Master of Science degree in a technical science or engineering discipline
  • Ten years practical experience in dosimetry and/or radiation protection operations within the DOE Complex
  • In-depth technical understanding of internal and external dosimetry principles
  • Practical experience and/or working knowledge in one or more of the following:  radiation detection/counting instrumentation, counting statistics calculations, radiochemical separation processes, TLD processing, technical writing, and able to perform or evaluate complex spreadsheet analyses
  • Understanding of applicable Federal regulations including the DOELAP standard
  • Understanding of radiochemistry principles as applied to radiobioassay


Preferred Qualifications


  • PhD degree in a technical science discipline or engineering with a concentration in health physics
  • Certification by the American Academy of Health Physics
  • Previous experience serving as a Team Lead, Supervisor or Manager for a team of technical nuclear industry professionals
  • Experience working in a research and development environment (i.e., DOE National Laboratory) with high energy particle accelerators, transuranics, and non-typical isotopes
  • Currently qualified as a DOELAP Assessor
