Group Leader, Emerging and Solid-State Batteries

We are seeking a Senior Scientist or Distinguished Scientist position to lead world class capabilities related to Solid-State Batteries and Emerging Battery Technologies.  Selection will be based on qualifications, relevant experience, skills, and education. The chosen candidate is expected to develop and execute research projects in the areas of 1) high energy density all solid-state batteries including, but not limited to, solid state cathode composites, solid electrolytes, and metal anodes, 2) emerging battery technologies, including but not limited to, sodium ion batteries, sulfur based batteries and lithium metal batteries, and 3) probing of interfacial and bulk phenomena in batteries by cutting-edge characterization techniques.


Candidates should have demonstrated records of technical accomplishments in 1) in battery materials and electrolytes, 2) cell design development, characterization, and performance evaluation, and 3) materials processing and manufacturing.  These research areas are aligned with U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) Office of Vehicle Technologies and other DOE programs.


The Group Leader position is in the Electrification and Energy Infrastructure Division, and research will primarily be conducted at ORNL’s Grid Research, Integration & Deployment Facility (GRID). The successful candidate will lead solid state battery science, collaborate with staff across ORNL, and will be expected to serve as technical communicator at conferences and project review meetings and interface with scientists at other national labs, industry, and universities.


The R&D Group Leader brings together a group of peers with the primary goal of pursuing global scientific leadership in their field, nurtures ORNL’s culture among group members, and continues to build and scale up individual excellence and impact in R&D. The R&D Group Leader reports to and works closely with the R&D Section Head to implement the group’s scientific vision; develops group members to enable their career advancement; establishes capabilities that enable programs to excel at the forefront of science and technology; performs R&D to advance the field of knowledge and/or technology in one’s respective specialty; sets, implements, and models standards for performance of work consistent with Environment, Safety, Security, Health, and Quality (ESH&Q) requirements and business rules; and ensures a diverse and inclusive work environment where every employee feels safe, heard, and appreciated—a workplace that sets an example for the broader community.


Major Duties / Responsibilities


  1. Conceives, research and develops disruptive chemistries and materials for high energy and power density solid-state batteries and emerging electrochemical storage systems.
  2. Develop a vision and implement a cohesive group research strategy to ensure the success of new and ongoing research projects to position the group for future success in solid state batteries.
  3. Develop and implement plans to exploit new opportunities and/or expand existing efforts.
  4. Assist staff in setting performance R&D goals consistent with the group’s strategy and members’ long-term career goals.
  5. Provide relevant input to assist the R&D Section Head with staff development while providing direct and impactful guidance to staff on regular basis.
  6. Attract a quality, diverse pool of top candidates and hire staff members who are committed to world-class R&D and aspire to be the best in their field.
  7. Advance the reputation of the group members and standing of the group as a whole through establishing collaborations, Professional Society leadership and involvement, and organization of technical events.
  8. Support group members by consistently reviewing technical products such as proposals, publications, and artifacts to ensure high quality and consistency with ORNL standards.
  9. Hold regular scientific/technical group meetings and be visible in the labs and workplace.



Basic Qualifications:


  • A Ph.D. in Materials Science, Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, Electrochemistry or an equivalent degree with a minimum of 10 years of experience in Energy Storage or Conversion.
  • A record of excellence in battery research and development as evidenced through peer-reviewed journal articles and/or issued patents.
  • A record of excellence in program development and project management.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills
