Overview: 

The Enrichment Systems Fabrication and Demonstration section within the Enrichment Science and Engineering Division (ESED) is seeking a Group Leader for the Manufacturing Process Engineering Group. This group of Mechanical Process Engineers and Lab Coordinators support the mechanical systems development and deployment of prototypes through process and quality control engineering of fabrication, assembly, and inspection techniques and own the prototype manufacturing development labs. The Enrichment Science and Engineering Division serves the nation in two critical areas: advancing enrichment technologies, and exploring enriched stable isotope production and applications. The division leverages an elite staff of scientists, engineers, technical professionals, and technicians with the world-leading capabilities of Oak Ridge National Laboratory to deliver groundbreaking advancements with a variety of applications, from national security to life-saving medical treatments. This position reports to the Enrichment Systems Fabrication and Demonstration Section Head.

 

Major Duties and Responsibilities :

 

ROLES:

 

Provide leadership to the group that strategically advances science and technology consistent with ORNL’s aspiration to be the world’s premier R&D institution and ORNL’s science culture. Lead group by setting, implementing, and modeling standards for performance of work consistent with environment, safety, security, health, and quality requirements and business rules, and ensuring a diverse and inclusive work environment.

 

The Group Leader leads a group of peers with the primary goal of pursuing global leadership in their field, nurtures ORNL’s culture among group members, and continues to build and scale up individual excellence and impact. The Group Leader reports to and works closely with the Section Head to implement the group’s mission; develops group members to enable their career advancement; establishes capabilities that enable programs to excel; performs and/or supports R&D to advance the field of knowledge or technology in one’s respective specialty.

 

The Manufacturing Process Engineering Group Leader will be responsible for ensuring the successful manufacturing process engineering of prototypes to include development and documentation of fabrication and processing techniques, assessment of performance of prototypes in the field, and continuous improvement of processes.  Manufacturing lab ownership will include selection of requisite machining, assembly, and inspection equipment as well as ensuring safe lab operations and timely flow of manufacturing processes.

 

RESPONSIBILITIES

    • Provide leadership and implementation strategy for group programs and projects.
    • Attract, develop, motivate, and retain staff.
    • Assist with acquisition of needed resources and capabilities.
    • Collaborate with other line and program managers to assemble the best available project teams and technical resources for each project.
    • Collaborate with other line and program managers in proposal development as necessary.
    • Review and provide input to staff’s proposals as necessary.
    • Lead group/program performance in the completion of assigned tasks and projects consistent with expectations and in support of the Lab Agenda.
    • Be the technical leader resource for group members when issues arise.
    • Ensure the quality of products and services meet customer requirements.
    • Ensure work is carried out safely, securely, and in compliance with laboratory policies, standards, and procedures.

 

Basic Qualifications

  • Bachelor of Science degree in Mechanical Engineering with at least 8 years of relevant professional experience or a B.S. in another engineering field and a minimum of 10 year of relevant professional experience
  • Demonstrated staff and/or technical leadership experience
  • Demonstrated experience in the design, fabrication, and/or operation of test stands or other complex mechanical systems
  • Machining and fabrication shop experience
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills and the ability to work effectively with a wide range of individuals in a diverse cross-functional community

 

This position requires the ability to obtain and maintain a DOE Q clearance from the Department of Energy. As such, this position is a Workplace Substance Abuse (WSAP) testing designated position. WSAP positions require passing a pre-placement drug test and participation in an ongoing random drug testing program.

 

Preferred Qualifications

  • Active DOE Q clearance
  • Experience in engineering or fabrication shop managment
  • Experience with machining and fabrication in an R&D or test environment
  • Tooling design experience
  • Geometric dimensioning and tolerancing experience per ANSI Y14.5
  • Experience with 3D modeling and design software packages

 

This position is a full-time staff position.

Physical Requirements:

Work involves various physical requirements and working conditions. As such, a pre-hire physical will be required after offer.

 

Export control, clearance:

This position requires access to technology that is subject to export control requirements. Successful candidates must be qualified for such access without an export control license.
